For the season referenced in the subject line of this thread, who would be your pick for Best Positional Player (Include defense and position played in your determination), Best Pitcher, Best First Year Player and any other topics of discussion from this season.

Best Hitter: Joe Morgan
Led the league in OPS+ from one of the tougher positions on the diamond. He was tops in OBP and tops in SLG%. He also had 60 stolen bases. I would think that this would rate as Morgan's best year.

Best Pitcher: Tom Seaver
A very close race but I'll go with Seaver over Cy YOung award winner Randy Jones. Seaver pitched 271 innings with a 127 ERA+.

Best Rookie: Pat Zachary
Metzger and Zachary tied but Zachary pitched 80 more innings and had a better ERA than Metzger.

Even if you didn't have to do a Big Red Machine guy here...and I think you have to....Morgan is still the obvious choice here.

I'll pick Jones just to be contrarian.....OK I can't....Here's a guy who won 20 and 22 with the Pods and K'ed 196 people in 600.1 IP.......WOW, don't see that happening much. For his career 735 K's in 1933ip. J.R. Richard's first big year is here too.

I take Koosman. 200K's and 21 wins on the same Mets team as Tom Terrific and his 14 wins.

Top player: Joe Morgan. It's pretty clear that Morgan is again the best player in the league, and his team won 108 games besides. An easy pick. Schmidt is a clear 2nd.

Top pitcher: Randy Jones. In DIPS, Jones is lousy in Ks of course. But he does well in the other two categories as he walked very few and kept the ball in the park. He also was working with a lousy team behind him, save Winfield. Well, Johnny Grubb was OK.

Top rookie: Pat Zachry. Call me a homer, but I'll go for the Reds' guy.
