For the season referenced in the subject line of this thread, who would be your pick for NL Best Batter, NL Best Pitcher, Best First Year in the NL Player, NL Manager of the Year, and NL Best Comeback Player?
Why?

Best Batter: John O'Rourke
The Red Cap slugger had a monster year. Best Pitcher: Tommy Bond The winner by a nose over Monte Ward and Whoop-La White Best Rookie (I am going by baseball-reference's debut listing): John O'Rourke The best hitter and the best rookie Best Manager: George Wright Took the Grays to the first of two NL titles in his only year at the helm. Best Comeback: George Wright An OPS+ of 57 in 1878! Wright had a pretty good year managing and hitting for the Grays. |

Win Shares data:
Among pitchers, Pud Galvin had 61, J.M. Ward 51, Tommy Bond 50. Larkin had 39, Will White 33, also Jim McCormick 33. Position players were led by Paul Hines at 22, followed by Charley Jones of Boston with 21, King Kelly at 20, then at 17 were Jim O'Rourke, Ned Williamson, Deacon White, and John O'Rourke. For top player, I'll take Hines. O'Rourke was operating in a helpful hitting environment, and the OPS+ lead was: Code:
For pitchers, I'll take Galvin. The Little Steam Engine was working up a good head of steam about then. |

Best Batter: Paul Hines
Close between him and John O'Rourke, but I'll give the hits leader love. Best Pitcher: Monte Ward ERA leader as a rookie, wins leader in his sophomore year. Not bad. Best Manager: George Wright Nice when you're only year managing nets you a pennant. Best Rookie: John O'Rourke Had good enough numbers that I'd swear he were Jim. Best Comeback: King Kelly Went from average player to superstar in the course of a season. |

O'Rourke and Ward were the NPOTY for 1879. I'll go with them, where applicable. Others to follow.

Hines and "Gentle Jeems" Galvin are great nods.
John Clapp for MOY for his work with Buffalo. Give Honest John Morrill some comeback love. |
