2) The Cubs announced their rotation for the Division Series--Kerry Wood, Carlos Zambrano, Mark Prior, Matt Clement.

3) The Reds re-signed SS Barry Larkin to a 1 year contract. The terms were not confirmed, but it's reportedly $700,000 with the possibility of up to $300,000 in incentives.

4) The Whitesox have called a 2 PM press conference, presumably to officially announce the firing of MGR Jerry Manuel.

5) Astros P Billy Wagner says he expects to be traded during the offseason.

After 2.73 ERA/13 RSAA and 2.52 ERA/15 RSAA seasons, Wagner had a 1.78 ERA/26 RSAA in 78 games. He has a 2.54 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.31, and 100 RSAA in 464 games.

6) Mets INF Jay Bell announced his retirement.

After -9 RCAA/.749 OPS and -5 RCAA/.556 OPS seasons, Bell hit .190 SLG, .319 OBA, .509 OPS, -11 RCAA in 72 games. He finished with a .759 career OPS, compared to his league average of .753, and -17 RCAA in 2063 games.

7) The Royals fired bullpen coach Tom Gamboa.

8) BlueJays SS Mike Bordick says he's "99.9 percent" sure he's retiring.

9) Dodgers RF Shawn Green says he's willing to move to 1B, while the LA Times reports such a move is going to be seriously considered.

10) Orioles P B.J. Ryan tied the team's record for games in a season.

After 4.25 ERA/0 RSAA and 4.68 ERA/-2 RSAA seasons, Ryan had a 3.40 ERA/5 RSAA in 76 games. He has a 4.38 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.61, and 1 RSAA in 260 games.

The new top 10--

Code:
GAMES YEAR G T1 B.J. Ryan 2003 76 T1 Tippy Martinez 1982 76 3 Mike Trombley 2000 75 T4 Alan Mills 1998 72 T4 Gregg Olson 1991 72 T6 Armando Benitez 1997 71 T6 Stu Miller 1963 71 T6 Armando Benitez 1998 71 T6 Jesse Orosco 1997 71 T10 Buddy Groom 2001 70 T10 Buddy Groom 2000 70 T10 Todd Frohwirth 1993 70 T10 Buddy Groom 2002 70

(The list does include the team's time as the St. Louis Browns, even though nobody from that period made the top 10.)

11) Rockies RF Larry Walker will have surgery next month, to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, and also expects to have surgery on a torn meniscus in his right knee. He is expected to be ready for spring training.

After 70 RCAA/1.111 OPS and 46 RCAA/1.023 OPS seasons, Walker hit .476 SLG, .422 OBA, .898 OPS, 24 RCAA in 143 games. He has a .967 career OPS, compared to his league average of .756, and 492 RCAA in 1806 games.

12) Brewers 1B Richie Sexson became the first player in team history to play every inning of every game. He became the first player in the majors to do it since Travis Fryman, in 1995.

After 13 RCAA/.889 OPS and 25 RCAA/.867 OPS seasons, Sexson hit .548 SLG, .379 OBA, .927 OPS, 33 RCAA in 162 games. He has a .876 career OPS, compared to his league average of .779, and 80 RCAA in 813 games.

13) Diamondbacks P Curt Schilling says he might be willing to waive his no trade clause during the offseason. But, once the season starts, that chance would expire.

Schilling is eligible for free agency after the 2004 season. After 2.98 ERA/47 RSAA and 3.23 ERA/35 RSAA seasons, Schilling had a 2.95 ERA/34 RSAA in 24 starts. He has a 3.33 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.18, and 284 RSAA in 450 games.

Schilling became just the 6th pitcher to have at least 3 consecutive years with 30+ RSAA starting with age 34 or older--

Code:
T1 Cy Young 1901-05 5 T1 Lefty Grove 1935-39 5 T1 Randy Johnson 1998-02 5 T4 Early Wynn 1954-56 3 T4 Greg Maddux 2000-02 3 T4 Curt Schilling 2001-03 3 T7 Dazzy Vance 1927-28 2 T7 Burleigh Grimes 1928-29 2 T7 Dutch Leonard 1947-48 2 T7 Preacher Roe 1949-50 2 T7 Jim Bunning 1966-67 2 T7 Phil Niekro 1978-79 2 T7 Steve Carlton 1980-81 2 T7 Roger Clemens 1997-98 2 T7 Kevin Brown 1999-00 2

14) Whitesox DH Frank Thomas has the opportunity to become a free agent. He has until the end of the World Series to decide if he wants to remain with the team, for $6 million in 2004. If he declines, the Whitesox can keep him by making a $8 million offer, in which case Thomas can either stay or pay the team $2 million and become a free agent.

Thomas says he'd like to stay.

15) Yankees LF Hideki Matsui set the team record for games in a season.

Matsui hit .435 SLG, .353 OBA, .788 OPS, 5 RCAA in his first 163 major league games.

The new top 10--

Code:
GAMES YEAR G 1 Hideki Matsui 2003 163 T2 Bobby Richardson 1961 162 T2 Chris Chambliss 1978 162 T2 Roy White 1970 162 T2 Roy White 1973 162 T2 Roberto Kelly 1990 162 T2 Don Mattingly 1986 162 T8 Roger Maris 1961 161 T8 Bobby Richardson 1962 161 T10 Bobby Richardson 1965 160 T10 Bobby Murcer 1973 160 T10 Graig Nettles 1973 160 T10 Joe Pepitone 1964 160

Is this a serious answer?

If you replay (ie. you don't get your 4.5 innings in), I thought that scrapped all statistics involved.

The Yankees and Orioles played a tie game late in the season. The game was official, so the stats counted. Since the score was tied, the game was a tie, which then had to be replayed. So, the 162 games that had winners/losers counted plus the 1 game that was official, but a tie.

.

This tie talk throws me back to a Cubs-Reds game at Wrigley in 1985. This was before Chicago began playing home games at night. It was the game in which Rose caught Cobb for lifetime hits. It was called after five innings due to rain. Because of the teams’ standings (or lack thereof), a makeup game was never deemed necessary.

The highlight of the game was a guy tying a guy named Ty. It ended in a tie.

Incidentally, Harry Carey was wearing a tie. Don’t know what he had for dinner, but there was this little hole-in-the-wall on Addison a block from the stadium that served great....
