Lightbulb Greatest To Wear The Number Game

A friend at work asked me about this - - a game where we pick the greatest player ever to wear a number - - starting with number 1 and ending with 99.

Most would agree that Ruth gets # 3. But, there would be some strong arguments around 5, 8, 9, 24, 44, 32, etc.

Any interest? Any ideas on how we could work it in a thread? Should we have a thread for each number? That would seem the easiest. Maybe do only 3 or 5 numbers a week.

Thoughts appreciated.

All my ATM, security and passwords may be given away in this game, but sounds good to me

As long as we all agree that Rey Ordonez was the greatest to ever wear #1, I'm in.

Now that you said that, I think we should start with 1/8, no?

I would suggest that we just leap in and argue, debate, fuss, and feud over who was the best wearing a certain number and not try to make it a recurring, organized thread. To quote you Sir Stephen, you can never know which threads are going to catch fire.

So if you ask us to agree to be enthusiastic about a certain thread before we've experienced it, we might mislead you.

I made a post about Rogers Hornsby that was kind of sitting around and then we got into a nice debate on it and got joined by BorisP and suddenly it took off and got over 130 views. As you said, you can't predict that. My Dick Allen post has been largely ignored. I put a lot of time and research into that so... You just can't tell.

A rule that I've come up with is I won't research something just for the group. Hell, none of you may care! If I want to know the answer, I'll do it. That prevents frustration and keeps me from feeling unappreciated. If you aren't doing something similar, you might at least bare that thought in mind.

Why don't we start playing?

I'll suggest that the greatest player to wear number 39 was Dave Parker. Any thoughts?

Is there a web site somewhere that lists the players along with their numbers. I have no idea who else has ever worn 39.

The soxs have the stupidest rules about retiring #'s. I am ok with Manny wearing 24 (Stanley kinda broke it in...and I have adjusted) because Dewey was ok with it....other than that it would be war! Manny will have to prove his worth to me, and that will take time. 24 still means Dewey in my book!
