6) Ellis Burks passed Chili Davis and tied Dick Allen into 63rd place on the all time HR list, with 351.

7) The Mets will place C Mike Piazza on the 15 day DL and will call up C Jason Phillips.

Piazza has a severely strained right groin. After 34 RCAA/.957 OPS and 17 RCAA/.903 OPS seasons, Piazza's off to a .613 SLG, .422 OBA, 1.034 OPS, 13 RCAA start in his first 32 games. He has a .965 career OPS, compared to his league average of .770, and 439 RCAA in 1425 games.

Phillips has a .730 OPS/1 RCAA in 24 career games (41 PA), including a .533 OPS/0 RCAA in 7 games (12 PA--2 for 10, 2 walks) in 2003.

1) Angels RF Tim Salmon set the team record for career walks.

Salmon's .883 OPS/33 RCAA in 2002 was his 7th season with 30+ RCAA in his 10 year career and he is off to a .520 SLG, .401 OBA, .921 OPS, 10 RCAA start in his first 39 games. Salmon has a .901 career OPS, compared to his league average of .772, and 318 RCAA in 1427 games.

The new top 10--

Code:
WALKS 1 Tim Salmon 867 2 Brian Downing 866 3 Bobby Grich 630 4 Jim Fregosi 558 5 Chili Davis 493 6 Troy Glaus 413 7 Rod Carew 405 8 Albie Pearson 369 9 Reggie Jackson 362 10 Wally Joyner 336

Salmon is also the record holder in walks above the league average--

Code:
WALKS DIFF PLAYER LEAGUE 1 Tim Salmon 356 867 511 2 Brian Downing 317 866 549 3 Bobby Grich 240 630 390 4 Troy Glaus 154 413 259 5 Albie Pearson 145 369 224 6 Chili Davis 144 493 349 7 Reggie Jackson 139 362 223 8 Rod Carew 128 405 277 9 Tony Phillips 87 186 99 10 Fred Lynn 75 228 153

2) The Yankees placed DH-1B Nick Johnson on the 15 day DL and called up P Jason Anderson.

Johnson has a stress fracture in his right hand and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

Anderson had a 9.53 ERA/-4 RSAA in his first 7 major league games, earlier in the season.

3) Indians CF Milton Bradley returned to the lineup yesterday, after being removed from Wednesday's game in the 6th inning, for jogging to first after hitting a popup, and being out of the lineup on Thursday. Bradley had a closed door meeting with MGR Eric Wedge and while the rest of the world would call his absence on Thursday a benching, Bradley disagrees.

Maybe Bradley's right. Maybe it wasn't a "benching." Maybe, since it was just a "dugouting."

After -20 RCAA/.620 OPS and -9 RCAA/.723 OPS seasons, Bradley's off to a .520 SLG, .425 OBA, .945 OPS, 10 RCAA start in his first 26 games. He has a .701 career OPS, compared to his league average of .772, and -31 RCAA in 243 games.

4) The Padres called up Ps Carlton Loewer, Charles Nagy and Randy Keisler, placed Ps Clay Condrey and Brandon Villafuerte on the 15 day DL, sent P Roger Deago to the minors and moved Ps Kevin Jarvis, Jay Witasick and Kevin Walker from the 15 to the 60 day DL.

Loewer had a 6.06 ERA/-34 RSAA in 43 games with the 1998-99 Phillies and 2001 Padres.

After having 3 consecutive years with a double digit negative RSAA, despite pitching a grand total of under 175 IP during that time, Nagy made his 2003 debut yesterday. He has a 4.51 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.55, and 11 RSAA in 314 games, with all except yesterday's coming with the Indians.

Keisler had a 7.19 ERA/-18 RSAA in 14 games with the 2000-01 Yankees and will start on Monday.

Condrey has a strained rib cage muscle. Condrey has a 5.49 ERA/-11 RSAA in 18 career games, including a 8.47 ERA/-17 RSAA in 9 games (6 starts) in 2003.

Villafuerte has a sore shoulder. After having a 1.41 ERA/8 RSAA in 31 games as a 26 year old rookie in 2002 (he also pitched in a total of 9 games with the 2000 Tigers and 2001 Rangers), he's off to a 4.60 ERA/-2 RSAA start in his first 22 games in 2003.

Deago had a 7.84 ERA/-5 RSAA in his first 2 major league starts.

Although Witasick is among the pitchers being moved to the 60 day DL, that moves is as purely a paperwork only move as they get. He could return to the DL on Monday, while this move just created a spot on the 40 man roster to allow the Padres to make all of these moves.

5) Padres C Wiki Gonzalez became the first position player to pitch in 2003.

Gonzalez pitched a hitless inning, with a walk, in his emergency appearance.

6) Expos P Tony Armas will have surgery next week, to repair tears in his rotator cuff and shoulder. While a timetable hasn't been set yet for his return, he could be out for the season.

After 4.03 ERA/14 RSAA and 4.45 ERA/-5 RSAA seasons, Armas has a 2.61 ERA/9 RSAA in 5 starts. He has a 4.11 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.33, and 23 RSAA in 86 games.

7) The Devil Rays called up P Brandon Backe, activated SS Julio Lugo and sent P John Rocker and SS Antonio Perez to the minors. Today, they will call up P Jeremi Gonzalez and are expected to send INF Felix Escalona to the minors.

Backe had a 6.92 ERA/-4 RSAA in 9 games with the 2002 Devil Rays.

After 4.32 ERA/1 RSAA and 6.66 ERA/-4 RSAA seasons, Rocker had a 9.00 ERA/0 RSAA in 2 games (just 1 IP) in 2003.

Gonzalez had a 4.71 ERA/-10 RSAA in 43 starts with the 1997-98 Cubs, before having his career ruined by injuries.

8) The Phillies called up P Brandon Duckworth and sent P Eric Junge to the minors.

After starting his career with 3.52 ERA/6 RSAA and 5.41 ERA/-30 RSAA seasons, Duckworth's off to a 6.46 ERA/-4 RSAA start in 4 starts.

Junge has a 2.21 ERA/4 RSAA in 10 career games, including a 3.52 ERA/1 RSAA in 6 games in 2003.

9) Mariners RF Ichiro Suzuki reached 500 career hits.

After starting his American career with .838 OPS/46 RCAA and .813 OPS/30 RCAA seasons, Suzuki's off to a .392 SLG, .359 OBA, .751 OPS, 4 RCAA start in his first 40 games.

10) The Royals called up P Jason Gilfillan and sent P Kris Wilson to the minors.

Wilson has a 5.27 ERA/-5 RSAA in 71 career games, including a 4.87 ERA/0 RSAA in 10 games in 2003.

Although Gilfillan has a 0.73 ERA so far in AAA, he came into the year with a 4.08 career ERA in 6 minor league seasons. The 26 year old was given a C- grade by John Sickels and didn't make it onto Baseball America's top 30 prospect list for the Royals.

11) The BlueJays called up OF Reed Johnson.

Johnson was 3 for 4, with 2 HBP, in 4 games in the majors earlier in the season.

12) The Tigers placed DH Dean Palmer on the 15 day DL and called up INF Kevin Witt.

Palmer has recurring neck and shoulder injuries and he's admitting this could be the end of his career. After playing just 57 and 4 games in the previous 2 years, he's off to a .163 SLG, .235 OBA, .397 OPS, -11 RCAA start in his first 26 games. Palmer has a .796 career OPS, compared to his league average of .766, and 21 RCAA in 1357 games.

Witt has a .571 OPS/-5 RCAA in 35 career games.

13) Rangers 3B Mark Teixeira was scratched from yesterday's lineup, due to soreness in his left thumb. He did appear as a pinch runner and is in today's lineup.

Teixeria's off to a .363 SLG, .330 OBA, .693 OPS, -3 RCAA start in his first 30 career games.

14) The Pirates called up P Pat Mahomes and designated P Dennys Reyes for assignment.

Mahomes has a 5.49 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.57, and -72 RSAA in 299 games, including a 3.86 ERA/1 RSAA with the 2002 Cubs.

After 4.92 ERA/-4 RSAA and 5.33 ERA/-3 RSAA seasons, Reyes is off to a 10.45 ERA/-8 RSAA start in 12 games. He has a 4.73 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.37, and -12 RSAA in 265 games.

15) The Dodgers activated OF Chad Hermansen from the DL and sent him to the minors. He cleared waivers and was removed from the 40 man roster.

Hermansen has a .601 OPS/-34 RCAA in 174 career games.

16) Dodgers CF Dave Roberts is having problems with his right hamstring. The Dodgers say he'll miss the next 2 games. Roberts originally injured himself on April 25, had to miss 7 starts and has missed an occasional start since then. While a move doesn't appear to be imminent at the moment, he could end up on the DL.

After having a .718 OPS/9 RCAA in 2002, his first year with more than 41 games or 156 PA, Roberts is off to a .348 SLG, .353 OBA, .701 OPS, 0 RCAA in his first 34 games.

17) The Rangers activated P Ismael Valdes from the DL and designated P Esteban Yan for assignment.

After 4.45 ERA/6 RSAA and 4.18 ERA/14 RSAA seasons, Valdes is off to a 5.74 ERA/-3 RSAA start in his first 5 starts. He has a 3.80 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.36, and 63 RSAA in 260 games.

After 3.90 ERA/4 RSAA and 4.30 ERA/1 RSAA seasons with the Devil Rays, Yan had a 6.94 ERA/-6 RSAA in 15 games. He has a 5.35 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.71, and -31 RSAA in 288 games.
