Netshrine Cleanup Hitter
|
Just back from PNC Park, and watching Schilling pitch against the Pirates. He looked to be throwing free and easy right from the first inning, and the results agreed. Schilling pitched a complete-game four-hit shutout, going all the way with just 104 pitches. He started the game around 94-95 on the gun with his fastball, and finished it the same, with occasional gusts up to 97. He threw mostly fastballs, but mixed in a few breaking pitches.
Looked very sharp, struck out 10 and didn't walk any. He was especially hard on Reggie Sanders, who struck out four times. The only really hard shot was a line drive by Randall Simon into the left-field seats, foul by about a foot. Based on what I saw, Schilling is ready to run off a good streak of pitching. This was the Pirates going to their 7th straight loss, but Schilling was completely in command. |

And probably not a moment too soon for the D-backs.

I guess Neyer shouldn't have pronounced the D-Backs dead. Schilling can get on a run, and that can only propel them back into the race.

Schilling is piece one, a healthy Unit and BK are pieces two and three ...
... but the D-Backs are going to need to start hitting to make any of that meaningful. Those pitchers can't win every game 1-0 or 2-1.
