Dick Stuart

The immortal Dick "66" Stuart has passed away at the age of 70.
Stuart, who once hit 66 home runs in a single minor league season, was a feared slugger who also was known far and wide for his fielding process.

Stuart's fielding prowess was so amazing that he had TWO nicknames that referred to it : "Stone Fingers" and "Dr. Strangeglove" .

Stuart led the AL in RBI in 1963 and was second in 1964

RIP

I remember him as a kid

briefly playing with the Mets, and my Mom telling me that he hit 66 Hr's in the miinor leagues, which was, for some reason more well known then Baumans record...RIP , dick stuart...

Stuart was Dave Kingman with a more consistent bat.

And more likable to boot.
Plus his stories of ineptitude are funnier...

Actually, Stuart had THREE nicknames. While he was in Boston, he was also known as "The Boston Strangler". :D

Stuart's value was driven down not just by his defense, but by his relative impatience at the plate. He only drew between 35-45 walks a season. He might have been a bigger star if he could have been a career DH, and he played in the 1980s, where there was a greater emphasis on plate discipline.

Still, Stuart was one of my favorites. I thought that the 1966 Mets were silly to trade Stuart and play Kranepool.

Maybe they were! :D

At 34, I of course didn't get to see Dick Stuart play but I heard enough about him. I've heard some people say he was a flake but I taped several episodes of the old "Home Run Derby" off ESPN Classic about a year ago, when Stuart participated as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates. When interviewed by the announcer Mark Scott (remember him?), Stuart seemed to be a genuinely nice guy - nothing flaky about him, except maybe his glove!!!!Sorry to see him pass.....
