Tom Glavine & Whitey Ford

Let me say that I don't in any way mean to say Tom Glavine is as good as Whitey Ford was or better. Yes I know, Ford has 5 rings while Glavine only has 1. Anyway, I was looking at how each pitcher fared starting with the year in which he turned 25 and found some interesting things:

Ford (1953 - 1964) 207 - 83 134 ERA+ 2697.0 IP
Glavine (1991 - 2002) 209 - 102 ~134 ERA+ 2698.2 IP

Aren't the similarities striking?

Glavine is a great pitcher and has been for a long time now. It is interesting to see the similarities for Ford and Glavine. I wouldn't have thought to compare those two in particular.

Imagine how tough Whitey would have been if he could have gotten the "wide" strike that Glavine gets. Or conversely, if Glavine could throw "cut" balls like Whitey did.

Moreover, the Fulton County Stadium (a/k/a The Launching Pad) was a much better hitter's park than was Yankee stadium

Also , Whitey was suspected of throwing "the wet one" on occasion

I've always wondered how good Ford would have been if he had pitched for anyone other than the Yankees?

Just a thought.

And the scuffed one, and the one with mud on it, and the one that Elston Howard doctored up, etc. etc. etc.

Very interesting question. Thanks for giving me something to chew on here.
