Really sorry to see him go. He truly was one of a kind. :(

Chick Hearn was a legend and among the greatest voices to ever call a game. His consecutive games streak is as impressive as there is in basketball history. His vivid and lyrical descriptions of the action are among the greatest ever. Chick Hearn will be missed by this fan. Godspeed Chick.

Whenever the Lakers were on national television it was always a disappointment because Chick wasn't doing the telecast. Mopst of L.A. turned down the sound and turned up the radio.
He kept pace with the action like no other. Airball Slam dunk , etc.........the lexicon of Chicky baby. |
I grew up in the Bay Area as a Lakers fan, but I didn't get to see or hear any LA feeds of Lakers broadcasts, so I had never even heard of Chick Hearn. Then I moved to Denver in 1986 into an area that was not wired for cable, so we had to have a satellite dish. With the dish I was able to pick up every Lakers home game on Prime Ticket, and I discovered Chick. After years of Dick Stockton, Dick Vitale, Bill Raftery, and Marv Albert, Chick was a welcome change for the better. I'll miss him. Lakers games just won't be the same anymore.

Man, he should have put a TM on "Slam Dunk" - - he would have been loaded.

I can't believe how much sadness I feel right now.
Chick Hearn has meant Laker basketball to me. We share the same birthday, along with Hendryx. I usually don't really give much thought when celebrities die, especially when they're getting on in years, but he seemed super human. This is really bizarre. I feel for his replacement. That's gonna be a thankless gig, if ever there was one. |
Spitball, I know what you mean. Announcers are like old friends. Players come and go, but if you're lucky, the guys in the booth are there seemingly forever. I grew up listening to Hall of Famers Harry Kalas and Richie Ashburn, they were like listening to two of your favorite uncles talking about baseball. Ashburn was one of the few true Phillies that was never booed by the home crowd, he was my father's favorite player, and I cried when he died.

RIP
While I didn't regard regard Chick Hearns as one of the absolute best, he was very good. At one time I travelled frequently to L.A. on business and I heard him enough to understand why the LA natives had such strong feelings about him. I appreciate the fact that he is of a breed, idiocentric and individualistic, that is dying off and, unfortunately, not being replaced. Too many of today's announcers are too vanilla They're gone long and I really miss Chuck Thompson, Harry Caray, Jack Buck, Ned Martin, Bob Prince, Bob Elson, Marty Glickman and Lindsey Nelson and Chick Hearns. Two more dark days are just around the corner when Ernie Harwell and Vin Scully hang it up. |
I'm with you spitball. I'm not a big basketball fan but Chick made it fun to listen to. I can't imagine a Lakers game without him. Now he has a permanant seat "high above the Great Western Forum".
