Dunston checks in...
I dunno if there's much to discuss here (sorry steve), but I thought I'd bring some comic relief to everyone's day:
Quote:
.107 AVG/.103 OBP/.214 SLG (.318 OPS), 1 RC, -3 RCAA |
Maybe he meant cards?
|
(Stuart Scott voice) If he's a playah, I'm a playah hatah.
|
my attempt to keep a straight face at that lasted, oh, 7 seconds. [uncontrollable laughter ensued]

I always find it interesting when someones batting average is higher than thier on base percentage, even if like in this case its an insignificant difference. With Dunston, I've been wondering for years how he has a job as a player. |
Gyb - you've been saving this title up for just the right moment, right? :D

I'm still trying to figure out why this guy is still on the Giants. Right now the answer is that he's the backup shortstop with Aurellia on the DL. That doesn't explain how he made it this far in the season. The Giants already picked him over Calvin Murray. Murray was at least hitting better than Dunston and is a good defensive outfielder. Now Tom Goodwin will probably be sent down when Aurellia returns instead of releasing Dunston.
I think the reason he's still there is that he's Barry's buddy. |
Seems like Dunston has been in the bigs forever. Isn't he about ready to draw social security.
|
Check out Soriano's stats last year:
645 AB's .285 AVG 26 HR 10 BB 118 SO HA HA. I'm lying. Those are Dunston's combined stats 99-01. |
Ah, but he's "gritty", a "gamer", and is "good in the room", and he can stand at five or six positions and look like a big league player.

Dunston stinks, but he's in denial! DEEP denial!
That being said, his stats over a short period of time may be a downward abberation. Dunston's no more than a part-timer utility guy now, but he may still be a marginal major leaguer. I could never say that.:D |
I know that Dunston's a gamer and all, in fact he's done well for the Giants for the past couple of years. But please, give me Goodwin. The guy is exactly what the Giants have been missing the past few years, the speed demon pinch-runner, slap hitter. Marvin Bernard, perhaps the worst leadoff hitter around. Anyone catch his act yesterday against Schilling? Actually, the answer is cut Bernard, not Dunston.

Goodwin ain't much better. In fact, he's worse. Last year he had a .286 OBP and a .336 SLG. He's a slap hacker, not a slap hitter. |
Luckily, we're talking about our 25th man here. At least we didn't trade our second best hitter for him!
|
I used to like him. Now I realise, he is Carl Everett Jr.
:agree: |
Just a little nostalgia here. Dunston had the greatest cannon for an arm. I can remember when he first came up he used to catch a routine grounder, wait a second, pat the glove a few times, and then fire a bullet into the stands. DUCK!! So the coaches convinced him to hurry the throw over every time as if carl lewis was running. It cut down on his errors a lot. In another thread, people were talking about the ability to improve plate discipline. This guy had the worst batting eye of all time. And if anything, it got worse over time. I can see him now...visualize if you will....some cheesy 1980's soft-toser throwing a sweeping curveball as the catcher slides over to the outside and drops to his knees. Just as the ball is about to hit the ground, Dunston takes that wild-a** two handed chop while both feet leave the ground. There's a grounder right to short and the throw beats a motoring Dunston to first by a milisecond. Aaah the memories.....

Shawon-O-Meter
Up to .139 and rising! WOW!
I think Damon Minor starting today is a good sign for the Gints. Maybe Dusty will finally dump that loser Snow. |
