Can't Count on Him

Since 1900 what pitcher holds the record of most losses by percentage of his teams losses?

Sidewinder 12-05-2003 10:59 AM

Dolf Luque, with 23 of the 1922 Reds' 68 losses.

What 3 19th century pitchers hold the all-time record?

KCBOOMER 12-05-2003 12:20 PM

The first problem is that Dolph Luque is not correct.

BBapplepie 12-05-2003 01:32 PM

Could it be Vic Willis?

KCBOOMER 12-05-2003 01:44 PM

It is not Willis.

Be sure to mention the season you have in mind.

Bill Dinneen lost 35% of the 1902 BOS AL team's games...

Bill Dinneen is not correct.

Maybe you guys ought to get this question answered before you wonder off on something else. Besides I can find fourteen pitchers in the NA that absorbed all of a teams losses in one season.

YankeeLinks 12-05-2003 10:51 PM

Boomer has a good point. While we have a rule about only one question per thread, follow ups on a closely related topic are OK. However, first let's get the original question right.

Well, you've stumped me...I've gone through some old MacMillans that list each team's record and its players right beside it, and I still can't find anyone to beat 35%.
Maybe time for a hint?

Craig S. 12-07-2003 03:39 PM

According to a note I made from an old ESPN column, Dolf Luque is listed by Elias as the record-holder at 33.8%. But Bill Dinneen seems to have that beat during his 1902 season.

So I'm stumped, too.

KCBOOMER 12-08-2003 11:33 AM

This HoF pitcher lost 20 of his team's 55 losses. That is 36.36%.

Skip 12-08-2003 11:40 AM

I believe you've given enough information for someone to iron this out now, man. :)

Sidewinder 12-08-2003 12:11 PM

It looks like the answer is Joe McGinnity for the 1903 Giants.

KCBOOMER 12-08-2003 12:22 PM

"Iron Man" Joe McGinnity lost 20 of the NY Giants 55 losses in 1903.

I see how I missed it now--my old Mac lists him with only 18 of their 55 losses. I forgot to check players with close to 35% against TB7.
Good question--the lists about highest % of a team's wins are published many places, but I've never seen anything about highest % of losses.

Craig S. 12-08-2003 04:21 PM

I agree - excellent question.

Where's the 'Hey, thanks for hitting trivia, Skip', 'You need to come around here more often', 'Good catch', comments? Jeez.
