This story sent chills down my spine, especially the part about the eraser on the chalkboard.

PHOENIX (AP) - A theology teacher at a Roman Catholic high school lost his job after giving a student a valentine that read "I hate you, I wish you would die."

A police report stated R. Scott Jones passed out similar cards Feb. 14 to his other students at St. Mary's High School, many of whom regarded it as a joke, but one 17-year-old boy said he was "freaked out" by the card.

According to the report, Jones handed the student the card and said "I made this for you."

During class, the report stated, the teacher used an eraser to write the word "Die" on the chalkboard while looking at the boy, then smiled.

Police said the incident remains under investigation. Jones, 44, was placed on administrative leave. He wouldn't comment.

"A teacher is in a position of authority," said Kim Sue Lia Perkes, a spokeswoman for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix. "It's not right to do something like that to a student. You can't even make a joke about something like that."

That's just wrong. You can't do something like this, joke or not.

Reminds me of the old story about the professor, who gave a lecture on gun control - - - he walked on stage, went behind the podium, faced the auditorium full of students, and then reached behind his back and pulled out a pistol (which was tucked into his belt) - and he then aimed it at the audience.

They all freaked and screamed - - but, he got his message across.
Pretty sure he was fined or fired too.

My seventh-grade shop teacher had one arm. This was back in the days when students were paddled when they were bad.

No one -- and I mean NO ONE -- was bad in his class more than once.

We had to make the paddles in his wood shop. If we were bad enough in class, he would break or badly split the paddles on our butts.

Best behaved class you ever saw.

But this Phoenix teacher goes way beyond creepy.

Oooh boy! That's some case of teacher burn-out.

The behavior is inappropriate. There are lots of time when I think our society is too-easily offended... but... uh... that's a more than a little over-the-top.

*gulp*........I agree with everything. More often than not, i think people make too big of a deal of small stuff and overlook major issues. This is way too freaky.

I heard about this, and my first thought was to wonder what was going through the teacher's mind. Do they not realize how wrong this is?

I concur with everything everyone has said thus far. Some things you just can't joke about - then, now or ever
