In the 9th inning of tonight's ST game, on a 1-4-3 comebacker DP, Mariano Rivera was in pain after making the throw to 2nd. First guess by the TV crew is that he tweaked his back.
Not the best thing in the world for Yankee fans.................

The early report from Brian Cashman is Rivera will be out 5-7 days.

AP says it's not his back:
TAMPA, Fla. -- New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera hurt his right groin delivering a pitch Monday night and may not be ready for Opening Day.
Rivera felt discomfort while making his final pitch in the ninth, an inning-ending double play grounder by Travis Chapman in Detroit's 4-2 win.

Maybe it is my imagination but it seems like the last year or two Rivera has gotten a number of these "nicked up" type injuries.

Rivera had a similar problem with his groin last year, resulting in one of his three visits to the disabled list.
Assuming that Rivera is able to return within a month with no lingering effects, I think this actually might work out well for the Yankees. It will give Torre and Stottlemyre a chance to test Acevedo, Osuna, and Contreras in critical situations late in games. And with Karsay questionable because of arm problems, the Yankees might need one of those three right-handers to step up and fill the role of primary set-up man.
Now if the Yankees can just find a way to rid themselves of Sterling Hitchcock and make room for Randy Choate as the second left-hander in the bullpen.

Hey, if they got rid of Hitchcock, then they'd be stuck with only 6 starters!
