View Full Version : Kenny Rogers - Getting Fried?

One could make a case that he was one of the Top 10 SP in the AL last year.
One could also make a case that his season last year was just as good as Jarrod Washburn's or Mark Mulder's season.
And, he still doesn't have a job for 2003? :confuse2:
At this point, even if he signed with someone, he would be at least two weeks behind schedule - as a pitcher.
No one needs a LH for their rotation? Chuck Finley is 40, this I can understand. But, Rogers is 38 and should be able to get at least a one-year deal, no?

The Orioles offered. He may have been being fussy, maybe he's considering retirement.

I think that Rogers has not understood the new economics that have popped up this year. I believe he's had a couple of offers but none to his liking.

I think Rogers is wanting stud starter money when is clearly isn't one. And which Rogers are you getting? Thee 2002 guy with an RSAA of +28 or the 2001 guy with the RSAA of -23.

He's a pain in the kiester to deal with, from what I hear. And his career isn't anything that would warrant mega-bucks.
Steve - are you trying to become a player agent by asking questions about mediocre players?

Even mediocre players should be able to find work.

...for mediocre money.
Rogers seems to think he's worth more.

Well, sure, but there's always a few players who are standing when the music stops because they want too much $$ or the teams that can afford them are in a different direction.
There's price, and there's fit - and there's fitting a guy like this in your team with a shoehorn who could disrupt the room and crowd out a young pitcher who needs the innings.

Rogers is a classic case of a guy with a 10-million dollar arm and a 10-cent head.

...and a million dollar body too.
This has to go to be the first time a gold glover is looking for a job this late in the offseason...really a damn shame because as inexpensive as his head is, he does well assuming you put him in the right environment.
Of course, I'm not expecting that 10-cent head to accept a below-average contract...and I'm not going to say anything about contracts...

I read, I think in Sporting News, that Rogers was looking for the right deal with a contending team.
Thing is, if I'm a contending team that is likely to be facing some high leverage games - Kenny Rogers is not on my go-to list.

Friendly amendment -- an incumbent gold glover.

Agreed - in a tight spot, he makes Armando Benitez look like Bob Gibson.

Some contending teams do want him apparently. Rogers is going up to the Metrodome for 2003. Really find nothing wrong with this move given the injury that Milton has...

Well... now that his friend BS won't give him a gazillion dollars for whacking his own team maybe he realizes in order to make some money he's going to have to continue fielding a contender.

Which is not to imply that fielding Kenny Rogers is the way to field a contender...

$2 million is very cheap for a reliable starting pitcher in today's market. And one more good starter could make the difference between Minnesota winning the division or coming in behind the White Sox.
You win the division -- extra revenue for playoff games, attendance goes up in general, merchandising does better, you can better justify raising ticket prices, etc.
In other words, it's a rational investment on which he expects to get a good return, financially.

Kind of shocking to see my Twins actually shell out a couple million for Rogers, but I would have rather seen them put Santana in the rotation and let him pitch.......
