Eddie Murray - Tris Speaker - Rafael Palmeiro

There is a connection between the three. They all have a particular distinction that nobody else does. What is it?

Had a feeling this one would be tough, so here's a small clue:

It has something to do with extra-base hits.

I thought it could have been - the only guys to have done:

EXTRA BASE HITS > 1000
DOUBLES > 500
WALKS > 1000
OUTS < 9000
OWP > .620

But, 9 other guy did that.

An impressive list:

1 Stan Musial
2 Willie Mays
3 Barry Bonds
4 Lou Gehrig
5 Frank Robinson
6 Ty Cobb
7 Tris Speaker
8 George Brett
9 Ted Williams
10 Eddie Murray
11 Rafael Palmeiro
12 Rogers Hornsby

Okay, another clue - all three guys achieved what they did without a certain other accomplishment.

If that makes any kind of sense.

I was going to guess 1000+ Extra base hits without winning an MVP, but Speaker won in 1912.

Each had most EBH in a particular decade?

No, but a good guess.

Okay, another clue - there are 3 categories for extra base hits, and there are 3 players on my list.

Each is in the top 20 in a career EBH category, without ever leading the league in that category in a season? (Murray 2B, Speaker 3B, Palmeiro HR)

Sorry I took so long to see your answer, but great job YL! They're not only in the top 20, but they're the career leaders in the respective categories among players who never led the league.

Eddie Murray - 17th in doubles, never finished higher than 6th

Tris Speaker - 6th in triples, never finished higher than 2nd

Rafael Palmeiro - 20th in homers, never higher than 2nd

I knew that one would take some time, because it took me time just to think of it.

And then Palmeiro leads the Al in homers next season and you need to find someone else to put on this list :)

I only got it because of your extensive clues. Otherwise, I would still be floundering.

Good question, Craig.
