1) Today's schedule--

Braves (Greg Maddux) at Astros (Wade Miller), 1 PM
Indians (Bartolo Colon) at Mariners (Freddy Garcia), 4 PM
Cardinals (Matt Morris) at Diamondbacks (Curt Schilling), 8 PM

2) The Phillies fired batting coach Richie Hebner and replaced him with Greg Gross, who was the bench coach. The rest of the coaching staff will return.

3) Tim Raines says he'd like to play another year. He says he doesn't necessarily have to be with the Orioles and he wouldn't mind returning to the Expos.

4) A's P Jeff Tam missed the last 5 games of the regular season and the team won't decide whether he'll be on the Division Series roster until the last minute.

5) Cardinals MGR Tony LaRussa says he still hasn't decided whether he's going to start Mark McGwire or Craig Paquette at 1B today.

6) The Braves will use a 3 man rotation in the Division Series--Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, John Burkett. Kevin Millwood will make a start in the instructional league tomorrow, will rejoin the team over the weekend and, if the Braves make it into the NLCS, he'll rejoin the rotation.

7) The Brewers sent 1B-OF Angel Echevarria, Cs Kevin Brown and Jesse Levis, 3B Mike Coolbaugh and Ps Rocky Coppinger and Gus Gandarillas outright to the minors.

8) The Mets sent P Tom Martin, INF Luis Figueroa and OF Jaisen Randolph outright to the minors.

Players who are outrighted to the minors are removed from the 40 man roster and have a week to either accept the assignment or become a free agent.

9) Giants 2B Jeff Kent is eligible for free agency after the 2002 season and isn't sure whether he wants to return to San Francisco, with retirement after season being a possibility.

10) Miguel Del Toro, who pitched in 23 games with the 1999-2000 Giants, was killed in a car crash on Saturday, at the age of 29.

11) Phillies 3B Scott Rolen, who is eligible for free agency after next season, says he's not interested in a long term contract with the team. According to Rolen, "I will not be reduced to a dollar amount. I do not intend to be bought by the Phillies. I am not interested in waiting for a new stadium for a commitment to winning. Honestly speaking, it would be very difficult [to sign a new contract] this offseason. I'm a year away from free agency, which is one of the most important times of a player's career."

12) The Dodgers are reportedly leaning towards not picking up P Jeff Shaw's $7.05 million option for next season.

:bigbarf:

I know Big Mac hasn't exactly been hitting well against righties this year, and Schilling has been known to strike out a lot of righties, but you might as well use Woody Williams as your 1st baseman rather than Craig Paquette.

Or - if you're going to use Mike Matheny at Catcher, put Eli Marrerro at 1st.

I was trying to think like Tony LaRussa.

Or not think, depending on your point of view. :p

McGwire cost me big in my HR pool this year. :splat:
He is in the lline-up tonight. Tony may have been blowing smoke.
