With St Patrick's day only six weeks away, it's time to dig out those Irish musical favorites in preparation for the corned beef & cabbage, boiled potatos, Harp and John Powers to be consumed on March 17th.

Leaving out Rock bands like U-2 (of whom good Saint Paddy wouldn't approve anyway) who are your favorites ?

In addition to the acts listed in the poll, one might consider, among others, the following:

John MacNally
John McCormick
Val Doonican
Des O'Connor
Big Tom & The Mainliners
Eileen Ivers
Cherish The Ladies
The Irish Tenors
Bing Crosby (this is a stretch but he recorded many Irish tunes)
Finbar Furey / The Furey Brothers
Seamus Egan
Patrick Street
Mary Black
Connie Dover

Why wouldn't St. Patrick like U2 (or the Boomtown Rats for that matter)?

What about Van Morrison or Sinead O'Connor?

PW - I dont get this. You include Bing, but leave out all the bands mentioned already by others. Seems kind of arbitrary - not really a poll of what are most likely to be favorites by most of those polled. We sort of had this argument on the "best performer" thread too, so I guess I'll just pass. My musical background is not diverse enough to have even heard of more than just the name of most of those you listed anyway - though I do have three Chieftains CDs. Sorry.

Sorry - my intent was Irish or Celtic music -Irish folk bands or performers - not modern rock bands most of whose music is Irish or Celtic only to the extent that the members live in Ireland. A reggae band from Dublin is not performing Irish music. A Van Morrison or Skinhead O'Connor would be marginal. The Pogues would be fringe but acceptable.

P.S. There is a difference between Irish folk music and Celtic music

Yeah -- they got my vote too.

I threw in "Thin Lizzy" just to get Smed's Irish up, and because they were a fine, underrate band. U2 isn't underrated. "Under a Blood Red Sky" is still the standard for a live album, IMO.

No real reason to advance this thread other than to say cherish the ould sod and have a good St Paddy's Day

Remember to dig out those old Dubliners, Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem, WolfeTones and Bothy Band tapes and records in order to celebrate in high style

I can already taste that corned beef and cabbage

The "ould sod' no longer exists, as it were. the Ireland of The Dubliners and BallyK andThe Quie Man is an anachronism.Ireland has the largest college educated workforce under 30 in Europe,Dublin is a happening place, The Ireland that my Da was born in is gone, and has been for many years

Of course it is, but that doesn't mean it should be forgotten
