View Full Version : Publicity or Stupidity?
I was cruising my favorite entertainment section on the net this morning when these headlines caught my eye:
R.E.M.'s Buck arrested for Air Rage, while Stipe protests speed bumps in hometown ( to their new album!)
Eminem back in court over weapons feud with Insane Clown Posse
Creed's leader in barroom brawl provoked by fan telling him to go back to Pearl Jam
Now I know that "normal" people find themselves in all kinds of predicements and they usually aren't painted across national headlines, but come on...what is it with musicians who have recently released albums showing up in the spotlight...coincidence? I'm beginning to think not. What ever happened to touring?
The best news of the day was the King of Pop asking Santana to lend a hand to his next venture. Not that Jackson is immune to being front page news, but I don't think he's ever started a brawl with someone.
Is this just another sign of the times? That you have to prove you're a bad ass so people will buy your music?

Rock is about rebellion.
So, who you gonna listen to Ozzy Osborne, Billy Idol, and Johnny Rotten - or -
Pat Boone, Liberace, and Lawrence Welk?
'Tude sells tunes. :cool2:

Old Dirty Bastard was in the news last week, although he ain't going to be making music any time soon. He's getting sent up for 2 to 4 for drug possession. He was smart enough to cop a deal that prevents him facing charges of bail jumping in an unrelated California case.
I for one will miss ODB while he's away, although more for his unintended comic relief than musical ability.

Buzz is down wit' ODB.
Should have known - - must be slipping - - used to be able to smell a Vanilla Ice Wannabe comin'.
Word.

How can you not be engaged by such a charismatic personality as ODB?
My musical orientation is all over the place, from Motown to Jimmy to the Dead (how I miss Jerry) to Snoop Dog and Dre. If I am loyal to one particulat genre, it is early '80s Rock and Roll.
You guys are killin' me...
My point is this: do they time these things???
I know it's about rebellion, I'm a punk rocker myself, and it don't get much more rebellious than that...but come on...Eminem being in court is old news, Creed are a bunch of wusses who couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag, and REM just plain know better! (Though protesting speed bumps is pretty damn funny!)
ODB is great for comedy, I agree. I know I love chillin' with my homies, talkin' smack and sippin' 40's...sheeeet.
I could relate to NWA for a brief second in my youth. Aaaiiiiggghhhttt???

I don't think these events are timed. I think these guys are just incredibly stupid and you could find an equal number of items in the police blotter for 'artists' who aren't on the verge of releasing a new album.
As for NWA, Eazy-E went before his time, although it probably saved Dre and Ice Cube. Straight Outta Compton was dope.

What's your favorite punk album?
Hands down, for me, it is The Clash's double album, The Story of the Clash. It doesn't get any better.

As was Kid Rock's follow-up: "I'm not straight outta Compton, I'm straight out the trailer."
I agree, Eazy-E crashed and burned way too early, I saw Ice Cube back in 92, it was pretty rad. Dre continues to amaze me.
And Net, no. But you can beat me with a baseball bat. :D

RIP Joey.
At least you made the front page of the Asbury Park Press in death.
Best Album, Punk, for me:
Gang Of Four
ENTERTAINMENT!
(Essence Rare still rings in my head.)
PS - - for those at work, I strongly recommend the "New Wave" Channel @ http://spinner.com
Thanks for the link!
Best punk album for me was Walk Among Us by The Misfits.
 I'm a Glenn Danzig super-freak. It's funny, I met him once and was so awe-struck, but he was kind and understood my babblings because I couldn't believe he was standing before me! I've met many famous people and he's the only one that invoked such a feeling of total helplessness, for lack of a better word. Sigh.
A close runner-up is Wild In The Streets by The Circle Jerks...those were the days.

Thanks - it's actually better than "regular" radio (to me).
