Really, what's the point of having the worst record in the NBA if you don't even get your top draft pick choice?
The Cavs, in an incredibly short-sighted move, fired coach John Lucas and probably lost LeBron James in the process.
They may still select James in the draft, if they get the lottery pick, but James can certainly hold out and go to another team if he doesn't sign by July 15th. It worked for Kobe. James made it clear that he wanted to play for the Cavs and coach Lucas. He is now making it equally clear that he will not play for the Cavs. Who can blame him?
Beyond LeBron, it was just dumb to fire Lucas anyway. He is famous for working with young talent. His Summer workshop in Houston for young talent is legendary. No other coach is going to make a lick of difference for the Cavs this season, so why fire the popular and talented coach at all?
For his part, Lucas is taking it well. He was fined $150,000 earlier for allowing James to practise with the team and, after he was fired, only stated that he "wanted his money back". He'll hook up with a good team any time he wants to -- he really just wanted the chance to work a miracle with the young talent the Cavs seemed to be trying to get. Now, they don't have him and they probably won't get much talent in the draft either. Now, they're just another crappy team.
