Just saw it. Not bad. Renee was awesome. Jones OK. Gere, well, in the acting scenes, he was the right choice.

I kept waiting for Renee to say, when Richard was questioning her on the stand, "I just lost t-t-t-time." ;)

Basically, in the movie format, it's a helluva lot easier to tell/follow the story.

I saw it on Broadway a ways back - - want to say Jan. 2000 - - with Bebe Neuwirth and Ernie Sabella (who was real good as Amos). And, this is where the movie falls short compared to the show - - - - when you see it in person, the music, the singing, the dancing just overwhelms your senses. That doesn't come across on the big screen.

On it's own, not comparing it to the show, the movie was enjoyable.

Heck, they even had a Babe Ruth mention in there! :thumb:

I hate musicals. I hate musicals with dancing even more. I liked Sound of Music and JC Superstar though.

I dunno - - - Take Me Out to the Ball Game (made in 1949) was OK..... ;)

Skip - - this isn't one of those movies where the "real action" stops and suddenly everyone breaks into song and dance............it's more like a Broadway Show and a movie shifting back and forth with each other. Not that bad - - BTW, I'm not a musicals guy either!

I'm not a musical fan by any means, but this is a great movie (# 3 on my list!).

Not original enough, in my view, to beat out great films like Adaptation for awards, but still a fantastic movie. I didn't know Renee Zelwegger had that performance in her. Really, I'd recommend this one before almost anything out right now.

Saw this one again on the weekend. Have to admit that Richard Gere can sing better than I thought, although his dancing was nothing great.

A definite Oscar contender, although I think Adaptation is a better film, and should have won the Golden Globe for musical/comedy.

I feigned a heart arrhythmia a few weeks ago to get out of seeing it.

poorme - try it, you might like it.

Craig - how was the audience, numbers-wise, on your 1st and 2nd time?

This is a great movie (# 3 on my list!).

The wife and I finally caught this flick this week-end and I must say it was FABULOUS!!! Zellweger, Z-J, Gere, Queen Latifah, and John C. Reilly were just superb. And every song was most enjoyable.

This has go to be the front runner for the Best Picture Oscar. Nobody saw "The Hours" or "The Pianist", the "LOTR" won't win anything significant until next year, and "Gangs of NY" was damn near incomprehensible that only some great acting saved.

Barring a huge change of heart from the voters, I can't imagine it not winning. It would be one of the few times when I'm not driven crazy by the Academy's voting.

I expect it to win too, and expect it is really very good, but I will only see it under duress or when my wife rents it for us without my knowledge. I just hate almost all musicals, Broadway style musicals especially. At this stage in my life, I doubt my mind will change. Guess I'm missing out.

Hope to see it when it comes on the dish - Skip - not a fan of the Music Man? Kiss Me Kate? Bye Bye Birdie? When did you turn into Andy Rooney? ;) :p

Smed - Ick. To date I like exactly two musicals. Sound of Music. JC Superstar. Oklahoma <inhales>. Grease <inhales>. I can't get into it from any single direction ... heck even Hair <inhales>, so its not just an anti-Broadway/Hollywood heyday thing. Oh yeah, opera inhales too. I like (at least in passing) operatic music, but opera as the all inclusive sound/acting/audio/visual/mind-expanding experience just plain <inhales> too. Oh yeah - ballet (to which I subscribed for years) is the most archaic, self-indulgent, insipid 'art' form extant. So there.

Thbbbbbb!

I'm really dreading this coming weekend. Denise is threatening to make me take her to see it this coming weekend. I pretty much agree with Skip about hating musicals, and knowing Richard Gere "sings" in this movie makes me dread this even more......

Cartman (and Skip) - I've never like musicals, but this movie was great. I'm not going to stick up for Richard Gere's singing, but the rest of the cast performs well. You may still hate it, but it's not as bad as you're thinking.

Well now, after SAG awards, Golden Globes, BAFTA, etc have spoken - is this one headed for Oscar greatness?

I liked it a great deal, but did I love it? Hmmm....

I don't think that's even a question. They might as well not bother with the ceremonies,

As to whether it's worthy of such acclaim, well, that's a completely different question. It's one of the best movies I saw last year, but certainly not an all-time great.

I got lucky. Denise wound up having to work Saturday night for someone and I didn't have to take her to see it......but I suppose I'll end up seeing it at some point.

Well, I finally saw the movie, in DVD while visiting my sister over the past weekend. I'm still not a huge musicals fan, but it was a pretty good movie.

CHICAGO was okay. I really am no fan of Richard Gere but he was acceptable in this film. Overall, I've seen far better musicals but it did have its moments. I'd give it 3.5 stars (on a 5 star scale)

fell asleep while watching this on an airplane... nothing about the first hour of it will make me rush to catch it again, though if it's on tv one day, i may finish it off
