Garland Buckeye? I have no idea if he had that nickname, but at least it fits the clue!

It is Garland "Gob" Buckeye who was also know as the "Pitching Pachyderm". Buckeye pitched from 1918 to 1928 and at 260 pounds he was one of the biggest players in the game if not the biggest. It is said that in 1928 when he catcher was James "Shanty" Hogan, a mere 250 pounds, that this set a ML record for biggest battery up to that time. This may still be the record for all I know.
Buckeye also played professional footbal in the off-season.
