This looks like a disaster waiting to happen. No James Cameron + Arnold on the downside of his career + smaller budget for special effects = train wreck.

...so well with a small budget and As playing a souless killer.his nonacting skillswere perfect.since then, of courese he has to play"good guys"{like this is reality.sigh] and the second one was bigger, cutting edge FX,bu the story was typically latter cameron,overdone...the third one could have rosie odonnell it it playing the terminator as far as Im concerned
I liked both the first two, but agree with WT and pat that this looks like a train wreck of Howard the Duck/Vanity Fair/Pluto Nash proportions.

i hadn't even heard about it till now. looking at imdb, it says:
-the film will have the highest budget of all time, at 170 million
-nick stahl replaces ed furlong as john connor
-the terminatrix was originally gonna be male - either vin diesel or shaq would've played him. they switched to female, and passed on Chyna and Famke Janssen before settling for a norwegian model, Kristanna Løken.

Another movie that just didn't need to be made. I can see the dollar signs in the eyes of the studio execs that greenlighted this thing. I too agree that it looks it will lay an egg the size of which that has not been seen since Howard the Duck or Ishtar.

I saw previews of it the other day and it didn't look too hot.

They had a preview on the Super Bowl and it doesn't look that good. It could be a really bad movie.

I'll see it eventually, but if Cameron's not involved, I don't expect much. Really after 2 there should not be another.

Despite my comment from January, I expect to see this - whether anytime soon, or just on video in 6 months, I don't know.

Exerpted from this review
For all the hype and the inevitable (and most likely short-term) box office bonanza, "Terminator 3" is essentially a B movie, content to be loud, dumb and obvious, and to leave the Great Ideas to bona fide public intellectuals like Keanu Reeves and the Hulk. Mr. Schwarzenegger, whose main contribution to American culture has been inspiring wicked parodies on "Saturday Night Live" and "The Simpsons," acts (if you can call it that) with his usual leaden whimsy, manifesting the gift for uttering hard-to-forget, meaningless catchphrases that is most likely the wellspring of his blossoming reported desire to seek elective office in California.
This Terminator professes not to recall ever having said "hasta la vista, baby," but he does let fly with gems like "I'm back," "She'll be back," and "My database does not encompass the dynamics of human pair-bonding." He also says, "You're terminated" to his robot rival, perhaps testing out a slogan intended for poor Gray Davis. But that's the next sequel.

I'll go weekend after next.
Considering all that was spent on it - Arnie got $30 mill, I think - there's got to be something there to enjoy.
I saw the HBO FIRST LOOK and it was good.

And what contrived, trite catch phrase will he utter in THIS one.
That was in T-1...T-3 is like "Police Academy XX - It's Way Too Lame for Another Title"

I believe the lines will include, "I'm back" and "You're terminated." If anyone expects meaning from this film, or anything beyond a pale imitation of the first 2 films, then they're as moronic as they take this film to be.
I don't expect every film I see to be riddled with symbolism, and I wouldn't want that all the time. If every movie was literary fare like The Hours, I'd likely follow Virginia Woolf into the water.
And pathogan - I know you chose to quote the most critical parts of the Times review, but overall it was fairly positive. As with any film, I think criticism is more well-founded once you've seen the film.

Pat - the review also said:
Next to the baroque postmodern pseudo-sophistication of the "Matrix" movies, which similarly explore the fate of humanity under threat of machine dominance, the new "Terminator" has a lumbering, literal-minded old-style feel.
Which is not, on balance, such a bad thing. Mr. Cameron has long since ascended from action auteur to king of the world, leaving his dueling robots and their human prey in the hands of Jonathan Mostow. Mr. Mostow's previous film was "U-571," a highly competent exercise in that squarest of all action subgenres, the submarine movie. And if he lacks Mr. Cameron's unusual gift for finding human drama amid all the explosions, chases and collisions, Mr. Mostow does at least film the explosions, chases and collisions with professionalism and something like wit.
Not a great review, but not a pan.
And if you want positive reviews, they're not difficult to find. E Online gave it a B+, as did Entertainment Weekly:
http://www.eonline.com/Reviews/Facts/Movies/Reviews/0,1052,88162,00.html
It got a B from the Dallas Morning News, a split vote from Ebert and Roper, and a bad review in the San Fransisco Chronicle. All of which makes it like many action blockbusters out there, few of which receive glowing reviews across the board.
I'm not saying that it's going to be a great film, or that I'll love it. My point is only that it makes almost no sense to write the film off before you've seen it. Saying you don't want to see it is one thing, but criticizing it without any basis for said criticism is illogical.

And I reserve the right to end my defense of the film if it stinks. I'll let you know tomorrow night. :p
It'll be a semi-fun, pretty good mindless action movie ... as opposed to the pretension that is the Matrix. But both will probably get my $$, and both probably via the video store. However, I might see T3 in the theatres, there's no way I'd drop the money for M2.

Yeah, Arnold's certainly not a threat to win an Academy Award!
I saw it last night - great non-stop action and an ending that was far better than I would have thought they'd come up with. The character played by Claire Danes was dull, while the "new" John Connor was very good.
Not a great movie, but definitely worth the admission.

Cool. Thanks. I'm going a week from Sunday.
Dude - You plan your movies a week+ in advance? As Les Nessman might say ... Ewwwwwww. Be spontaneous Wolfie. You know ... like me, who goes to maybe 1 non-kids movie per year.
(I got confused over whether to use a haha smilie, or a self-deprecating smilie at the end ... so I used neither.) I'll stick with  though I cant say who they're being rolled to.

Skip - it's a combination of:
1. Only being able to go on the weekends. (I get home too late during the week.)
2. Almost never going to a movie the week it opens.
3. Needing a baby sitter for a 1-year old.
Everything is planned these days!

I saw it today and think the above is dead solid perfect - right on the mark as a review.
For me, it was closer to the experience of the 1st one, rather than T2.
T2, to me, was more geared towards "check out the very latest in special effects" rather than "story, relationship development, stuff like that." T3, while full of action, relied more on being a "actual movie" (as opposed to a visual showcase) - like the 1st one was, again, to me.
My wife, who is more into "good" movies than the usual macho/action flicks that I enjoy, was with me. I asked her afterwards if she liked T3 better than X2. She said yes. I then asked her if she liked T3 better than Matrix Reloaded. She thought for a minute, and then said yes to that as well. (I offer this in case you wanted to hear the opinion of someone who went to the movie because they we dragged to go see it.)

FWIW, I watched this again, yesterday, now 4 months since I saw it in the movies, on DVD widescreen. I still liked it. This is a flick that gets a bad rep, IMHO. Betcha those quick to dismiss it (w/o seeing it), if they watched it, would say they liked it.
Saw it last night. I liked it. It wasn't as good as (or as preachy as) T2, but it was enjoyable as long as you went in expecting a well made action flick, not Shakespeare. I was pleasantly surprised and give it a solid B.

I have to disagree with Wolf's review of the movie.
anyway, my impressions:
1. Nick Stahl, appearance wise, excellent choice. He looks like he could be Reese's kid.
2. The opening was pretty good. Up until the first big fight.
Then it just got too fast paced. They changed a lot of the details that were revealed in T2 (justifiably so, the Terminators had to come from somewhere), but the details weren't fleshed out very well, and when you try to put things together theres a lot of inconsistencies and plot holes. They make Arnold's terminator really bad this time. His lines stink. bad rehashes of lines from previous editions. The terminatrix was cool, and works as an upgrade to the t-1000. Although, I don't think the t-1000 would lose to her in a fight. They do have some problems with the design though. Liquid metal with normal machinery underneath shouldn't be able to do some of the changes she does.
Basically, the movie should have been longer. A nice extension of one of the scenes in the middle of the movie would be nice as a way of explaining all the changes in skynet's genesis and the events surrounding it. They could have briefly slowed the pace and made the movie better.
The end was very good. It really saved the movie. It...ahhh...actually shocked me.
If you are a terminator completist, see it. otherwise, dont bother. And try not to think about it too much, it'll just give you a headache.
