"Sweet Lou" Piniella once hit a double while playing for the Yankees and then was ejected from the game while he occupied second base. What's the story?

He thought it should have been a HR and the umps only called it a double?

No, that's not it but it did involve an umpire's ruling.

Lou stubbornly refused to accept the ump's decision.

No, Lou touched the bases in proper order. Nor was the ball ruled to be foul. The umpires decision had nothing to do with what Lou did to get to 2B. But Lou balked when he heard what the ruling was.

He was batting out of order?

Lou did nothing that would have him called out. In fact the umpires decision directly caused a run to score for the Yanks without an out occurring.

Did the umpire make the wrong call at first and call it a homer, and while Piniella kept going around the bases, the other team tagged him out? Then Piniella got mad and was ejected?

For the umpteenth time Lou was not called out on this play.

On this play there was a runner on third and Piniella at bat and the pitcher in his stretch. As the pitcher begins his delivery one of the base umpires calls a BALK but the pitcher continues with his delivery with to home.

Sweet Lou raps the ball into the gap for an RBI and double. At that time according to the rules the BALK call took precedent over everything so the original runner on third was permitted to score (one base for each runner on base).

When the umps told Lou his hit didn't count and that he had to return to the batter's he refused. The continually told him to return to the batter's box and he continually refused. Out of frustration they threw him out of the game.

This rule has since been amended so that the offensive team can take the play or the balk.
