If Jim rice is going to go into the HoF it must be this year. We can then change his induction date to June 4th.
6-4-3 being so significant in Jim's career.

Red Sox Nation is preparing their declaration of war!
I can't see Rice getting in before Sandberg; that would be ridiculous.
I also have come to the point where I am clearly in the camp of Dewey Evans over Rice!
I would put Steve Garvey in before Jim Rice!
I would put Hernandez, Mattingly, or Will Clark in before Rice.
Rice is the Tony Perez of outfielders, IMO. He's not a disaster, but there are guys ahead of him!

I somewhat agree with Fuzzy, but Rice is ahead of Clark, Garvey, Hernandez and Mattingly. He is behind Sandberg and Dewey Evans. Rice has a hard time with the hall, he's not going to get voted in by the writers.

I think Boomer was just looking to have some fun here.........

Rice the Tony Perez of OF's? I'm insulted by that! The only Tony Perez of OF's can be Staub...and as I've stated before, his case is better than Tony's. But I digress.
Jim belongs in, I don't know when, I don't know where, I don't know how...if you have to keep him out so that he can go in with Dwight Evans, and I think someone needs to sign a petition to get someone to wave the waiting period for Dewey to appear on the VC ballot (10 year waiting period my ass), do it. But he belongs in.

Jim Rice does belong in the HOF. I would like the Vet Com to have both Evans and Rice go in. Players like them SHOULD not be over looked.

Hmmmm. I live in KC too, just like Boomer, and if I'm going to be cracking baseball related jokes I think I would look toward Kauffman Stadium before targeting some retired guy on the east coast. Isn't "The Royals have signed Albie Lopez to a $1.5 million deal" a hell of a lot funnier?
Seriously, I (obviously) think Rice should be in the Hall, and one reason for that is that the "6-4-3" complaint about him is largely a myth. Read Keith Woolner on this subject -
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=%22Jim+Rice%22&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&selm=MPG.138f9570735b1b099896eb%40nntp1.ba.best.co m&rnum=2
Had Rice faced an average number of DP opportunities (75 per 400 PA's, according to Woolner) rather than an extraordinarily high number (about 22% higher than average), it's really easy to do the math against Rice's actual DP rate and discover that his career GIDP total would drop from 315 to 257, without a single season being higher than 24. No, that's not outstanding, but it's also not embarassing or worthy of jokes. It's higher than average, but not so extreme as to be a major liability given a normal context. This is particularly true since there is NO evidence linking team GIDP totals with lower run scoring or lower winning percentages.
Unfortunately, analysts regularly downgrade Rice's offensive accomplishments because of Fenway - which is certainly fair to do - without also downgrading his supposed liabilities (GIDP and defense) which are also largely the function of his team or his ballpark. A bit of a double standard, no?

Not a peep, but since I'm not likely to be buying season tickets anytime soon, what with living 1500 miles away and all, I'll cut him some slack.

Well, I never understood why Yankee fans enjoy tormenting BoSox fans until now. It's like shooting fish in a barrel. For the BoSox faithful who think I was taking a real shot at one of your beloved heroes rest assured that in the future should I make an attempt at humor I will check to be sure the Sox are in no way connected to the joke. Sheesh!
BTW, JR, I can't think of anyone on this board who makes more deprecating remarks about their own team than I do. I have difficulty cracking wise about the Royals because I'm usually crying. Albie Lopez for god's sake.

Let's all play nice - - OK? :beg:
Remember - - it's good to agree to disagree. Thanks.
Also, personal attacks are NG at the NDF. Not saying that's going on here - but, let's ensure that it does not happen. Mucho Gratz.

I knew you were kidding Boomer, just as I was about Lopez. It's just that I have the irrational, knee-jerk reaction of defending Rice against all slights, serious or otherwise. To quote Spiderman, it is both my blessing and my curse.
(Uh-oh, a Sox-related thread with the word "curse" in it. Who said that? I'll kneecap the dirty so-and-so. Oh, it was me. Never mind.)
You gotta give me some props - not many people would refer to both Keith Woolner and Spiderman in the same thread.

Personally, I think Keith Woolner is Spider-Man. Have you ever seen them together?
Jim Rice is in line behind Andre Dawson, in my book. JR might get elected eventually, but there are others who should be ahead of him.

The corner booth in the coffee shop of the Hall of Pretty Good serves him well. He and the Cobra share biscuits and gravy quite a bit, while Guidry razzes Dewey about 1978.
Meanwhile, at the counter, Keith Hernandez smokes a cigarette and waits for another call from Jerry Seinfeld.

As long as you do so with the full knowledge that I'm too stupid to tell the difference, and hence might start quoting Keith Woolner again, be my guest.;)

Or would even want to !
I disagree that Rice is somewhere in the Hall of Pretty Good with Steve Garvey, Dave Parker, Tony Perez and Don Mattingly - he was better than any of those guys - only Mattingly's peak was as good as Rice and none of them had Jim Ed's career value

If you look up the definition of the word "tragic" in the dictionary, I would view that as more appropriate to the above-referenced scenario! :D

Agreed. I know this is a Jim Rice thread, but there's no way for us to pile on the Royals enough for the Albie Lopez signing.

I agree with sweaver. Sweaver's approach here is my general approach to most of the HOF debates we have here.
I will rarely say "No way, ever" to anyone someone would propose for HOF enshrinement. (Well, if you propose Bob Tiefenauer or Ed Kranepool, I would.) It is really an issue of who is ahead in line.
Jim Rice would not be not the worst OF in the HOF, not by a longshot. He had a disappointing career in my opinion; he faded all at once, after a good start. While I would not consider him the worst OF in the HOF if he were enshrined, but there are guys ahead of him. In my opinion, there will always be someone ahead of him in line, but we'll see.
