First off, a warning that this will probably be a tough question:

During the 2002 season, which relievers (min. 30 inherited runners) allowed the lowest percentage of these inherited baserunners to score? There were 5 guys who allowed 15% or less to score, and I'm looking for any of them.

As a hint, I'll say that none of them were closers, and 4 of the 5 were NL pitchers.

Justin Speier
Braden Looper
Scott Sullivan
Jim Mecir
Rick White

According to my source, you got one right - the top guy, Justin Speier.

And I had a typo on the original question - instead of 30 IP, it should have read 30 inherited runners.

those are the top 5 by Inherited Runs Prevented

Speier allowed 2 of 35 (6%) to score
Luis Vizcaino allowed 6 of 40 (15%)

I can't find info on the three others, so I'll guess Gabe White, Scott Sauerbeck, and Steve Karsay

Good job with Vizcaino, who was one of the five.

According to Stats Inc. the other 3 were:

Jesse Orosco (6-47, 12.8%)
Rich Rodriguez (5-38, 13.2%)
Scott Stewart (5-34, 14.7%)

I knew it would be a hard question, but I thought it was interesting to see which guys were effective in this role.

What about Jesse Orosco?

it's interesting that there's a big difference between straight percentage of baserunners prevented from scoring and IRP, which takes into account the situation (base the runner is on and number of outs)

so guys like orosco, rodriguez, and stewart (LOOGYs) were probably more likely to come in the game with, say, just a runner on 1st, but 2 outs....

however, guys with higher IRPs (despite allowing more runs), such as Looper, Sullivan, Mecir, R.White, probably came on with more dangerous situations (two or three men on and 0 or 1 out)

interestingly, the two players who are on top of both lists (speier and vizcaino) are right-handed
