My cousin and I were having dinner last year and lamenting the state of our Chicago baseball teams, and got to thinking - what is the definition of mediocre for baseball today?

To me, it's somebody that's not in danger of shuttling back and forth to AAA, but definitely has never been average or better than average, and couldn't possibly have a job in a 24-team league.

Who is today's Mr. Mediocrity? I came up with Dave Hansen, but I'm sure that others can do better.

J.T. Snow might be your guy. He is a fine fielder but after ten years 4,554 AB's he has a career OPS of .777 versus the league OPS of, you guessed it, .777.

Last year, it would be David Bell.

From dictionary.com: "Moderate to inferior in quality; ordinary"

Jorge Fabregas...he's always on a freaking roster and I have yet to figure out why...and it's been several years. I've always been surprised to see him because he just up and comes from nowhere...and does the same as he ever does, NOTHING. Except catch and bat left-handed...

For a pitcher, Jimmy Haynes, for a hitter, Bill Mueller. Both average players who are good in the right situation.

From last year's Tribe alone: Ricky Gutierrez, Milton Bradley, Einar Diaz, Ricardo Rincon -- these guys will always be on SOME team for SOME reason. Even in a 24-team league, there will be cheapskate owners who always finish last and are always looking for cheap labor to fill in the spots.
