Now that a year or so has passed and emotions aren't running as high as before.... What is your opinion of what should be done with the land that the WTC stood on? I'd be interested to see what our New Yorkers say.
I think building a structure that is the tallest building in the world might be too tempting to terriosts. I would like to see them incorporate some sort of memorial museum with some modest office buildings.

I don't think I would put up a structure that becomes the world's tallest building, especially in that part of Manhattan. It would just become a bullseye for terrorists, and I would think that people would be very nervous about working on, say, the 109th floor of that office building. Whatever they do build, though, should have some sort of memorial......

why build the tallest building in the world if the WTC wasn't that to begin with?

Well, it was when when it was built, wasn't it? I might be wrong, sometimes these things depend upon whether you count radio towers and the like. At any rate, I think the thinking behind proposing the tallest building in the world is a symbolic thing, a knock-us-down-we-rise-up-bigger-than-before kind of aesthetic. I am opposed to it, for all the reasons mentioned.

when it was built, yes it was.
but it hadn't been any longer for a few years now...
the projects are interesting looking, but a bit on the gaudy side, no? or, some would argue, on the god-y side....but i digress.

haven't been to barcelona yet, so couldn't tell you for sure ;)
but at least there, his influence is everywhere. whatever of these plans they use, it's not going to be a very subtle thing

From May 1989 to September 1997, I worked at 130 Liberty Street - - which was right across the street from the WTC, about 40-50 yards away from one of the towers. My wife worked in one of the towers - for a short time around 1991. I spent a lot of time there - - including the day of the first bombing in 2/93.
Should there be some sort of memorial there? IMHO, without question, yes.
Should they build something else there? Yeah, it is prime Manhattan real estate.
Should they worry about what they build being a future target? Would it be more of a target if it was tall? I'm not sure that location and height has much to do with targets as much as symbolism, ease of destruction, and number of possible kills.
The Empire State Buidling is about a 120' shorter than the WTC was - - and has about 8 less stories. But, I betcha that any Stadium holding the Super Bowl is more at risk than the ESB on the same day.
Build something nice - - the city could use it.
