AL BATTING
1. I. Suzuki, Sea .348
2. F. Catalanotto, Tex .339

I'm rooting like heck for Catalanotto to win the Batting Title. Great deal that Randy Smith made.

Why?

NY guy. The type of player that I probably would have been if I had major league talent - - good eye, hits the ball hard all over, some pop, no real position to speak of.................plus, it's just a good story. What were the odds of him being Batting Champ back when the season started?

I was expecting more of an anti-Ichiro theme.

:nono: You're a baaaaaaad boy Buzz. Ichiro would be my 2nd choice. I do not want Juan Gone to win it. Giambi would be cool - Alomar too.

I forgot - was Brad Ausmus involved in that one?

One of the few that he wasn't. This was the Frankie C, Kapler, and others for Juan Gone deal.

Player A: .381 OBP, .455 SLG. 123 RC, .681 OW%, .309 EqA, 47 RARP
Player B: .402 OBP, .506 SLG, 95 RC, .741 OW%, .315 EqA, 37 RARP
Player C: .474 OBP, .643 SLG, 163 RC, .860 OW%, .383 EqA, 96 RARP
Player D: .379 OBP, .606 SLG, 118 RC, .747 OW%, .331 EqA, 53 RARP
Player E: .404 OBP, .633 SLG, 160 RC, .696 OW%, .344 EqA, 94 RARP
Glossary: OBP = on base %, SLG = slugging %, RC = runs created, OW% = offensive won/lost %, EqA = equivalent average, RARP = runs above replacement player at the position

How do you rate them in the MVP race? I'd say C-E-D-A-B. How about you?

PS - Yes, Net, this pertains to this thread.

Depending on position - I might go CEDBA.

Agreed. B is the better hitter when he plays, but A clearly has more at-bats (hence the big RC gap and the smaller RARP gap).

OK - someone else answer Rob so he gives us the answer. I'm looking forward to this.

I agree with Rob's ratings.

Guessing:

A - Ichiro
B - Catalonotto
C - Giambi
D - Boone
E - Rodriguez

And I'd rank them CEDAB too.

So, is Rob saying that Frankie, percentage-wise, is playing better than Ichiro? Or, am I saying that...........:confuse:

Too many letters and numbers :dizzy:

A is Ichiro. Gaudy "traditional" stats, so-so "sabermetric" ones.
B is Catalontto. Great numbers, not enough PT.
C is Giambi, who looks back-to-back to me.
D is Juan Gone. I was actually surprised his numbers were this good. I always think of him as a BA/RBI guy with crappy peripherals.
E is A-Rod. I've been touting him as MVP, but I hadn't realized what kind of season Giambi is having.

Boone - Forgot about him; he'll get MVP votes.
.371 OBP, .575 SLG, 129 RC, .722 OW%, .328 EqA, 73 RARP.

Not in the A-Rod/Giambi class. A good argument whether he or Gonzalez is No. 3.

Wonder who will pay for Juan Gone over the winter?

Gotta be Boone, considering the position he plays.

Looks like the Tribe will really have to cut payroll. I'd bet the Orioles make a big push. He'd fit with the Braves, but I don't see them spending the money.

Good luck to wherever he goes. Better have a MGR that understands him. If I'm him, I sell myself to the Rockies cheap.

It always surprises me that players don't do that. Could you imagine the numbers A-Rod could put up there? What kind of endorsement opportunities would a shortstop who puts up .360-50-150 year after year (with the accompanying awards) get? Somebody - Bill James, Rob Neyer, one of the BP staffers - once said that someday, a truly great hitter is going to go to Colorado and hit .400. I'd love to be that guy's agent.

But, they would always have to hear crap about the home-road thing - - like Helton now.

The home-road thing isn't crap with Helton. His stats are truly inflated by Coors--

2001
Home: .774 SLG, .478 OBA, 1.252 OPS
Road: .579 SLG, .383 OBA, .962 OPS

Those are really good road numbers, but the difference between his home and road OPS is astronomical. We're talking about a difference comparable to the distance between Mike Sweeney and Rey Ordonez.

1998-2000
Home: .690 SLG, .455 OBA, 1.145 OPS
Road: .518 SLG, .371 OBA, .889 OPS

Now, we're talking about an OPS difference comparable to Bernie Williams vs. Rey Ordonez.

The thing that distinguishes Helton from someone like Dante Bichette is Helton also puts up good numbers on the road. But, the key word there is just "good." Take him out of Coors and he can forget about top 10 OPS rankings.

Probably the same deal with Larry Walker too? And, the Big Cat when he was there - - and, of course, Vinny Castilla.

Wish they would do something about that place - - may even make it more fun to watch a game if they had 20 foot walls across the whole OF - - make it like a racquetball game.
