I'm not ready to start on a hall of fame plaque for this guy based on two games, but he does look like a different player. It would be nice for the cubs to have a prospect not "wash out" for once.

People were too hasty to say he was a failure when he could barely drink legally in the Billy Goat. I don't know if he'll be a mega-star but he's certainly going to be a player of quality and distinction.

Plus, the Cubs are going nowhere this season (let the hate mail begin ;)), so they might as well play their youngsters...

Patterson is still so young that it is tough to tell. If he proves he can be an average player at this age then he probably has a good shot at being a star.
The Cubs look like they might be awesome in two years or so.

If the Cubs were in the AL Central instead of the NL Central they probably would be favored to win the division. The NL Central is very tough but the CUbs probably have as good a shot as any to make the playoffs.

I think the Cubs would be better off with Rosie Brown in center, but they decided to go with Patterson for defense. As long as they keep him at the bottom of the order and don't ask him to do too much offensively, he can help them.

He's drawn, what - 3 BBs in 2 games and has hit pretty well. Of course, 2 games is way too small a sample size, but it may be a good sign.

Wow...you guys are rough on the Cubbies (much deserved I guess). What excites me about them now as opposed to the past is that they are able to field a competitive team and still have a solid farm system. Used to be one or the other and oftentimes neither. I do think the future is looking good. I love having Roosevelt Brown around. He is a solid hitter and should do very well playing against RHP. I am VERY excited about Juan "Little Pedro" Cruz. Looking forward to watching him pitch tonight.

As a fellow Cubs fan, others are not as hard on the Cubs as we are on ourselves.
Baylor's going to mismanage this team to third place, but CP should be good. He's batting second now; I'd move him to sixth.

I think I agree with what someone suggested in another thread... by batting him in front of Sosa, he gets a few pitches to hit and build up confidence. I also see him in the 5/6 slots in the near future, but for now they could move Hundley up and drop AGonz down..

Thank you for refering to one of my posts. The biggest thing with Patterson is confidence. He is not a polished hitter at this point. The ability is w/o question. Hitting in fron of Sosa should excellerate his growth curve. After he is established I see him as a 5-7 hitter. Putting him there now could be a big mistake. My question is how can a player with poor strike zone command (at least in the past) have 3 walks in 2 games batting in fromt of Sosa. Could it be that he knows he should get good pitches to hit and is less apt to chase border line pitches.

I saw the kid out in Arizona ST, and he looked awful good to me..I thought enough of him to draft him in a Fantasy League.....
I hope he does well....

I just wanna ask your opinions on the Cubs young outfielder Corey Patterson. Do you guys think he's the real deal? Think he'll be able to deliver on his hype?

He's somewhere between Marvin Benard and Lou Brock. He's still young, so that's about as close as I can pin him right now. He has time to grow, or could stagnate about where he is.

He's only been in the Bigs for one full season and the smatterings of a couple of others. His performance to date has been dreadful to be kind. He will only be 23 next season so he still has time to get it together. If you held a gun to my head I would guess he is going to be average at best, but I honestly don't know.

I think patterson is the real deal. He's very very young and he's still an ok player. if He can just lean to control the strike zone I think he will be a quality regular if not a star. as for brown , he's been sold to japan and thats the best place for him. the guy is not a good CF and he really does not hit enough to play corner OF in the majors.

Interestingly enough, Patterson hit the best when he was leading off last season:
Batting 1st (235 AB) 277/311/409, 720 OPS
Batting 2nd (176 AB) 239/287/335, 622 OPS
Batting 6th (160 AB) 231/238/394, 632 OPS
