There's a new independent Frontier League team coming to my town in 2003. the General Manager is running a contest to name the team. I would like to come up with some suggestions that would be very "baseball" oriented, something that speaks to the history and/or character of the game. I figure all the regulars at Net Shrine would have some good ideas.
The team will be located in Columbia, MO, but the General Manager seems set on calling it the "Mid-Missouri ___________". I really hate regional monkers (Anaheim Angels is much better than California Angels). But that's the way he wants to go with it, and he's the boss.
So let me know if you have any ideas. If I put in the winning the suggestion, I win a pair of seson tickets for the first year. And if I win, anyone on Net Shwrine who is in the area (I know there are some in the KC area) or passing through can let me know and I'll pass off some tickets.

OK, maybe I should ask that you guys explain why you think your suggestion would be a good name. "Grinders" I understand and like, but I'm still wondering about Greyhounds, and Totally flummoxed by the hens.

Greyhounds was the best name I could come up with that paid tribute to baseball history in Missouri, and mainly because the Mid-Missouri Musials and Mid-Missouri Men didn't work as well. :)
(Granted, Musial didn't really deserve the Donora Greyhound moniker but you take what you can get...)
This also creates a slight reference to the speed-ball days of Herzog as well.
The references are mildly obscure, but it works for me and, best of all, I don't think anyone is using the name. :) It's "different" and that works, no?
Now, here's hoping they don't make up a compound word for the name.

Many people walk away and shake their head after talking to me.:p
I just like the name........scrub hens! The merchandise would just fly off the shelves!!hehehehe!:D
My wiser better half, Mr hmrsf thinks you should pick the Mid-Missouri Outlaws. He lived in St Louis as a yoot!

In deference to the great "Outlaw Josey Wales," the team should be named the Missoura Irregulars. Think of the rivalry should a Kansas Redlegs team come into the league.

some really good names for teams:
Rorke's Drifters
Krapp's Last Team
Mid- Missouri Mombo Kings
The Last Templars
Cold Comfort Farmers
The Turkey Samwicks
Mid-Missouri Mr. Wuffle's Revenge
Mid-Missouri Morris Dancers
Croatoan Conundrums
Drunken, Senile, Gun Nuts
Sodom Swingers
all the above names will be better than anything they actually choose.

Well...
um....
Interesting suggestions, Smithee.
Tell the truth, the "Mambo Kings" had already occurred to me. I say it occurred to me, not that I submitted it.
Can't say any of the others had occurred to me, though. Still trying to figure most of them out. Not sure I want to know who Mr. Wuffle is.

FOUL!! FOUL!! FOUL!!!
I'm sorry, but this ain't soccer. In Chapter 12, Article 17, subsection 4.7 of the Baseball Purists's Handbook, the following rule is clearly stated:
"All names of baeball teams, whether major league, minor league, amatuer, little league, or even Rotisserie League, MUST be in the form of a plural. No quasi-philosophical or metaphysical singular nouns (or any other part of speech) will be tolerated."
So, if you can't put an "s" on Mud, it isn't allowable.

Although, Ytown, I was inspired by your suggestion to send in the name "Mid-Missouri Mudders". So your suggestion, while reprehensible, did provie "Fodder" for my imagination.

Hello Mudders...hello fodder...there can not be...a name that's odder. :)
Where in the handbook does it restrict the usage of fake compound words, i.e. IronBirds and stuff like that? And does it mention the usage of gratuitous capital letters?

Yes I hate those made up words for baseball teams. Like "Sox" and "Phillies".

Don't go there. :) I like Sox teams...we have the Aqua Sox in the Sea-Tac area and we're just that, a team in Aqua Sox. Plus the frog is just damn cool...
Do tell me what a "Timber Rattler" is, though...I have never seen a Timber Rattler...

Ho-hum.
The highly imaginative people who are in charge of this new team have selected 10 names among the ones submitted, and the general public gets to vote on which one we like best. Of course, none of the rleases I have seen actually promise that the "winning" name is the one the folks in charge will choose.
But then again...who cares? Not me much, after looking at the final 10:
Mid-Missouri Marauders
Mid-Missouri Mustangs
Mid-Missouri Muskrats
Mid-Missouri Muleskinners
Mid-Missouri Mud Daubers
Mid-Missouri Polecats
Mid-Missouri Copperheads
Mid-Missouri Mavericks
Mid-Missouri Outlaws
Mid-Missouri Trailblazers
Just gets you all excited, doesn't it? And, if you're wondering, only two of those were among the more than 50 that I submitted (hey...if you want to win the prizes, you have to nominate every halfway intelligent thing you think of).
And there are no faked up compund words in the list, you will notice. Also nothing remotely creative or innovative. And, I might add, a few that are already taken. I have to wonder if these folks have an underst anding of trademark laws.
Anyway, thanks for input. And if you want to have your say even more, you can vote for one of those 10 by email, and they won't even know that you don't live anywhere near Mid-Missouri. the details are at Name Your Team (http://www.columbiatribune.com/Ads/nameyourteam/index.asp)
Yes ... the list is somewhat uninspired. Perhaps we can use the name Mid-Missouri Mid-Iocraties for the whole bunch. :)

Sorry I got to this thread late or I would have suggested the Mid-Missouri Bushwackers. It's unique and it's got regional significance, unlike to "Outlaws" suggestion that made the final ten.

The announcement of the winning name is to be made today at 2 PM. And no, they haven't called to invite me to the news conference as the contest winner.
Based on the 10 finalists, I'm sure the choice will be the dullest, least original one in the group. I'm betting on Trailblazers or Outlaws, the two least original choices.

Didn't Mr hmrsf say go with the Outlaws?

At least I wanted to be original with Greyhounds. That would've been different. And you could have a popular mascot with the kids if you made him look like the Soccer Dog from WC '94. :) (That dog flatout ruled...)
Mavericks has been done before. The only time I would've allowed a boring nickname is if the team was in Independence, I would suggest Pioneers in that case.
But I digress. They could've done better...much better...now they're just a team with an unoriginal name, and a boring "first" name to boot. It'll fade into obscurity soon enough...
