1) The Mariners reached 100 wins for the first time in their history.

2) Yankees P Roger Clemens set a team record with a 15 game winning streak, breaking the mark of 14, set by Jack Chesbro, in 1904, and Whitey Ford, in 1961. Clemens also increased his record to 19-1 and is tied for 7th in the league with 28 RSAA.

3) Jason Giambi set the A's record with his 22nd intentional walk of the season.

After narrowly losing to Carlos Delgado for the 2000 AL Babe Ruth Award (my version of the MVP), Giambi is on his way to getting the award this season, hitting .649 SLG, .477 OBA, 1.127 OPS, 98 RCAA, .846 OWP, 14.02 RC/G, 162 RC in 136 games.

4) Curt Schilling reached 20 wins for the first time in his career.

Schilling, whose 47 RSAA are 2nd in the NL to Randy Johnson's 57, broke Johnson's team record for W in a season.

5) On Tuesday, Astros P Roy Oswalt set the team rookie record for wins in a season, with his 13th. The old mark of 12 was set by Jim DeShaies, in 1986.

Oswalt's having a very good rookie season, with a 2.68 ERA and 34 RSAA, to go along with a 13-2 record. He ranks 6th in the league in RSAA and he doesn't have enough IP to qualify for the leader list, but if he did, he would be 2nd in the league in ERA.

6) Expos RF Vladimir Guerrero reached 500 career RBI.

7) Dodgers RF Shawn Green says he will sit out the team's September 26 game, against the Giants, due to Yom Kippur.

8) The Mariners expect SS Carlos Guillen's sprained left ankle to keep him out of the lineup for at least a week, while the trainer says, they "hope for less than 10 days, but we'll have to see."

Meanwhile, MGR Lou Piniella says Mark McLemore will take over as the starting SS, at least until the division is officially clinched, and tomorrow they will call up AAA SS Ramon Vazquez.

Guillen's having a bad year, hitting .337 SLG, .316 OBA, .654 OPS, -14 RCAA, .391 OWP, 4.07 RC/G, 50 RC in 130 games. He came into the year with -8 RCAA and a .717 career OPS, compared to a league average of .791 and a positional average of .724, in 105 games.

Meanwhile, McLemore's having a career year, hitting .379 OBA, .384 SLG, .763 OPS, 13 RCAA, .597 OWP, 6.43 RC/G, 65 RC in 108 games. In his 15 previous years, McLemore never had a single year with a positive RCAA, he was working on a streak of 4 consecutive years with a double digit negative RCAA, with 8 such years in the past 9, and had a .680 career OPS, compared to his league average of .767 and his positional average of .722.

9) The Cubs activated P Felix Heredia from the DL.

Heredia's having a terrible season, with a 6.17 ERA and -5 RSAA in 48 games. He came into the year with -13 career RSAA and has never had a season with a positive figure, although he did have 0 in 1999.

10) The A's activated P Jim Mecir from the DL.

Mecir has a 4.18 ERA and 3 RSAA in 43 games this season. He came into the year with double digit RSAAs in each of the past 2 years and 3 of the last 4 seasons.

1) The owners sent the union a letter stating they will attempt to make changes to the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Sending the letter is nothing more than a legal formality. The National Labor Relations Act requires a party to send notification to the other side, within 60 days of a CBA expiring, that they will seek changes.

2) Rangers C Ivan Rodriguez will have surgery on the patella tendon in his left knee next week. Rodriguez will be out for the rest of the season and when he can return next year won't be known until after the surgery.

Rodriguez finishes the season hitting .541 SLG, .347 OBA, .888 OPS, 18 RCAA, .604 OWP, 7.49 RC/G, 86 RC in 111 games.

3) Yankees SS Derek Jeter's strained left hamstring will keep him out of the lineup until at least Monday.

4) Padres 3B Phil Nevin was scratched from yesterday's lineup, due to the flu.

Nevin's having the best year of his career, hitting .581 SLG, .396 OBA, .976 OPS, 47 RCAA, .725 OWP, 9.30 RC/G, 114 RC in 129 games. He's working on career highs in every stat in the preceding sentence.

5) Brewers 3B Tyler Houston reinjured his right foot running the bases on Monday and may be out for the rest of the season. Houston had just returned to the lineup, after missing 7 weeks due to a stress fracture.

If he is through, Houston would finish the year hitting .472 SLG, .343 OBA, .815 OPS, 2 RCAA, .525 OWP, 6.23 RC/G, 39 RC in 75 games. He would end a streak of 4 consecutive seasons with a double digit negative RCAA.

6) Indians P Bob Wickman has a strained oblique muscle, wasn't available to pitch yesterday, and is day to day. MGR Charlie Manuel says Danny Baez would probably be the closer during Wickman's absence, with John Rocker being a possibility.

7) Astros 1B Jeff Bagwell missed yesterday's game. Nothing serious and it was just his 1st day off the season. Meanwhile, RF Moises Alou was also out of the lineup, as MGR Larry Dierker is hoping the rest can help him get out of a recent slump.

8) Orioles 3B Cal Ripken has nagging injuries, including his back, which may force him to either DH or sit out some of the remaining games in his farewell tour.

9) A's OF Johnny Damon has missed the past couple of games, due to a swollen left hand, and expects to be able to return to the lineup tomorrow.

Damon's having a real bad year, hitting .368 SLG, .320 OBA, .688 OPS, -17 RCAA, .406 OWP, 4.49 RC/G, 74 RC in 137 games. But at least he has moved himself out off the AL's 10 worst OPS and RCAA lists.

10) Redsox OF-DH Dante Bichette missed yesterday's game, due to elbow tendinitis. He's day to day and is expected to miss a few games.

Bichette's hitting .464 SLG, .329 OBA, .793 OPS, 1 RCAA, .509 OWP, 5.89 RC/G, 58 RC in 102 games. This could be just his 4th positive RCAA in his 14 year career.

09-06-2001, 11:56 AM
1) Reds CF Ken Griffey Jr. missed yesterday's game, due to a tight left hamstring.

Griffey's hitting .569 SLG, .384 OBA, .953 OPS, 22 RCAA, .674 OWP, 8.95 RC/G, 66 RC in 88 games.

2) The Braves called up SS Wilson Betemit this week, but since he doesn't have a visa to travel to Canada, he won't join the team until tomorrow.

3) BlueJays RF Raul Mondesi was scratched from yesterday's lineup, due to flu-like symptoms.

Mondesi's hitting .467 SLG, .349 OBA, .816 OPS, 10 RCAA, .553 OWP, 6.34 RC/G, 92 RC in 133 games. He hasn't had a season with a double digit RCAA since 1998 and his .349 OBA would be the 2nd highest of his career, behind his .360 in 1997.

4) The Devil Rays recalled P Jason Standridge.

5) X-rays on Braves C Javier Lopez's left little toe were negative. Lopez suffered a bruise earlier in the week.

Lopez is having his worst year since his 1994 rookie season (-11 RCAA, .718 OPS), hitting just .413 SLG, .305 OBA, .718 OPS, -12 RCAA, .408 OWP, 4.77 RC/G, 53 RC in 112 games. This will be his 2nd consecutive year with a negative RCAA.

6) Angels utilityman Shawn Wooten will have surgery on torn cartilage in his left wrist and is likely to miss the rest of the season.

Wooten would finish his rookie season hitting .466 SLG, .332 OBA, .798 OPS, 2 RCAA, .529 OWP, 6.10 RC/G, 35 RC in 79 games.

7) The Cubs called up utilityman Chad Meyers.

8) Mariners RF Ichiro Suzuki tied the AL record for singles in a season, with 167, tying Harvey Kuenn's 1953 mark.

9) Brewers P Jamey Wright has a streak of 10 consecutive games with a hit batter. Elias reports that's the longest streak since at least 1970.

Wright has 17 HBP this season, putting him 1 behind the team record, which he set last year.

Update on the sabermetric baseball encyclopedia--I expect to have an announcement on the next edition either sometime today, or the end of tomorrow, at the latest.

Amazing stat to me - imagine winning 100 - five times or more - and never winning a ring in any of those seasons! PAIN!

Here's what happened to them in those seasons--

Dodgers
1899: 101-47, NL champions, no World Series
1941: 100-54, lost to the Yankees in the World Series
1942: 104-50, 2nd place, 2 games behind the Cardinals
1953: 105-49, lost to the Yankees in the World Series
1962: 102-62, lost to the Giants, 2-1, in a playoff series
1974: 102-60, lost to the A's in the World Series

Braves
1898: 102-47, NL champions, no World Series
1993: 104-58, lost to the Phillies in the NLCS
1997: 101-61, lost to the Marlins in the NLCS
1998: 106-56, lost to the Padres in the NLCS
1999: 103-59, lost to the Yankees in the World Series

1898 and 1899 can't fairly be called championship less seasons, but they also don't fit our definition of World Championship seasons

Good stuff. Thanks Lee. At least the Dodgers spread it out. Poor Braves:

1997: 101-61, lost to the Marlins in the NLCS
1998: 106-56, lost to the Padres in the NLCS
1999: 103-59, lost to the Yankees in the World Series

Three years. 310 wins. No rings.

310 wins in 3 years and not a single World Series W.
