*--hit 1 yesterday

6) The Phillies tied the Braves for 1st place in the NL East.

7) If the Yankees beat the BlueJays and the Mariners beat the Devil Rays today, the Devil Rays will be mathematically eliminated from winning the AL East.

8) Sammy Sosa tied Andre Dawson for 27th place on the all time HR list, with 438. Sosa hit #52 and is on pace for 64.

Sosa tied the NL record with 17 HR in August, tying the mark set by Willie Mays, in 1965, while the major league record for the month is 18, by Rudy York, in 1937. Sosa, whose 20 HR in June 1998 was a major league record for any month, joined York as the only players with 2 months of 17+ HR.

Sosa also set the Cubs record with his 30th intentional walk of the season.

9) Jeff Bagwell passed Ron Santo into 64th place on the all time HR list, with 343.

10) Luis Gonzalez hit #49 and is on pace for 61.

11) Alex Rodriguez reached 40 HR for the 4th time and 4th consecutive year.

Rodriguez became the 5th player to hit 40+ HR in back to back years, while doing it with different teams, the 13th player to hit 40+ HR with different teams, the 9th player to have at least 4 consecutive years with 40+ HR and the 19th player to have at least 4 years with 40+ HR.

12) Todd Helton reached 40 HR for the 2nd time and 2nd consecutive year.

13) Reggie Sanders reached 30 HR for the 1st time. His previous career high was 28, in 1995.

1) In May, Mariners LF Al Martin crashed into teammate Carlos Guillen during a game and said it reminded him when he played for USC in 1986. According to Martin, "For some reason, probably because I was young and dumb, I decided I could make a head-on stop of [Michigan's] Leroy Hoard," Martin said in May. "I hit him, or rather he hit me. You remember those big tree-trunk legs Hoard had? That's what hit me."

However, it turned out that USC not only didn't play Michigan in 1986, but didn't play them in the decade prior to the 1989 Rose Bowl. Furthermore, according to AP, "Coaches and players at USC and at Martin's high school in West Covina, Calif., say they have no knowledge of Martin ever attending or playing at the university, and USC has no record of him ever having enrolled, receiving scholarship money or playing in a game. He also is not in any of the USC team pictures, the [Seattle] Times reported. The story of Martin attending USC on a football scholarship has been in baseball media guides for the three major league teams he has played for -- the Pittsburgh Pirates, the San Diego Padres and the Mariners. The story has also appeared in several newspaper articles over the years. The information for those accounts was provided by Martin."

Meanwhile, Martin told the Seattle during spring training that he has been exonerated from last year's domestic violence incident filed by one of his wives. But, according to the prosecutor, Martin pled guilty, spent a night in jail and will remain on probation until November 2002.

2) Redsox SS Nomar Garciaparra flew back to Boston to have a MRI on his right wrist and the team is still waiting for the results.

3) The Cardinals say they will recall P Rick Ankiel when the rosters expand.

4) Indians MGR Charlie Manuel had surgery to have scar tissue removed from his colon.

5) The Dodgers activated P Kevin Brown from the DL.

6) The Mariners signed P Randy Myers to a minor league contract.

According to MGR Lou Piniella, "It's more for next year than anything else."

7) The Brewers activated LF Geoff Jenkins from the DL and placed P Jimmy Haynes on the 15 day DL, retroactive to August 24.

Haynes has a strained left oblique muscle.

8) On Sunday, Twins P Eddie Guardado tied the Twins record with his 490th appearance, tying the mark set by Rick Aguilera. Walter Johnson holds the all time franchise mark, with 802, when the team was the Washington Senators.

9) The Pirates activated P Mike Lincoln from the DL and sent P Bronson Arroyo to the minors.

10) The swelling on Dodgers 2B Mark Grudzielanek's broken middle finger has gone down and he expects to be able to return on Thursday or Friday.

2) In addition to setting the Cubs's record with 30 IBB, Sammy Sosa became just the 7th different player to have a 30+ IBB season.

3) Jason Giambi reached 100 RBI for the 4th time and 4th consecutive year.

4) Ryan Klesko reached 100 RBI for the 1st time in his career. His previous career high was 93, in 1996.

5) BlueJays CF Jose Cruz Jr. was scratched from yesterday's lineup, due to a strained lower right abdomen, and was able to appear as a pinch hitter.

6) After missing 7 games with a strained right hamstring, Manny Ramirez returned to the Redsox's lineup, as the DH. The team hopes he can return to the outfield during their current series with the Indians.

7) The Dodgers sent P Jeff Williams to the minors, to make room for Kevin Brown.

8) Royals 1B Mike Sweeney returned to the lineup, after serving his 10 game suspension.

9) Tigers 1B Tony Clark says he has a slight shoulder separation. But, "It's nothing that I'm real concerned about. But I also know that there's going to be some discomfort there until I stop using it."

10) The Angels activated INF Jose Nieves from the DL.

1) The Astros placed P Pedro Astacio on the 15 day DL, retroactive to August 22.

The team expects him to be able to return as soon as his 15 days are up.

2) Braves MGR Bobby Cox has decided to pull the plug on Ken Caminiti playing 1B and the job will go to rookie Wes Helms.

Shame - if he stayed healthy, Haynes was on pace to break Brian Kingman's 20 Loss record.

Bad wording on my part. Though you'd think it was a record, the way Kingman followed around Omar Daal last year.

I just can't believe Reggie Sanders has 30 HRs. How'd that happen?
