Anyone read it yet? Thoughts?

I love Mike Lupica as a sportswriter, and I enjoy watching him on Sports Reporters. But even at that, I just can't read his attempts at fiction. I don't think it's just him, but a complete aversion to any kind of sports fiction. I always want the "real thing," not something fabricated.

I just read the first dozen pages or so of this book. If someone else has read the whole thing, please tell me if it's worth the trouble. So far, Lupica has been creating stereotyped ex-ballplayers who live the kind of boozing, sleeping-around lifestyle that Lupica apparently wishes he lived, rather than being stuck as an elitist, whining sports writer. So far, he seems to be building up to a "Curse of the Bambino"/ return of the the has-been pitcher story that has been done before.

I think I have better things to do thatn continue to read this book, unless someone can convince me otherwise.

I'd give it 15 more pages - if it doesn't improve - - abort!

OK, this AM, I read the 1st 12 pages - - I was sent a review copy of the book a while ago and it's been sitting in a pile of other books.

I agree with what you wrote - - but, at the same time, while it's not Le Morte d'Arthur or something that deep/complex, it seems to me, so far, worth reading some more - - - - every once in a while, for me, it's OK/enjoyable to read something that is entertaining (at a Game Show or kid's cartoon kinda level) which requires little thought or attention.

Let me read some more before I go too far either way.......
