View Full Version : Movies You Just Won't Turn Off
Do you have movies that no matter how often you surf into them on TV, you just can't turn off (at least without someone forcing the issue)?
Last Sunday I missed most of the NFL and MLB du jour because of a trip to Mammoth Cave. Today, I was primed to at least be in and out starting about halftime of the early game and surfing between whatever baseball and football was on. Ah well ... I hit TBS right at 3pm and found the beginning of The Outlaw Josey Wales. Bam - 3 hours gone. I got to introduce my oldest son to this classic, though he's probably a bit young, but I again missed a bunch of prime time sports.
No real issue here. I guess if it's on TBS I better be careful in late night surfing since they'll be showing it over and over again and I'll get no sleep. Thank goodness I dont subscribe to premium movie channels.
Choosing only from movies that tend to be shown pretty regularly, others that do this to me are The Longest Yard, Rooster Cogburn, Jaws, about a third of the Bond movies, and the occasional (choices vary by mood) flick from the bang-em-up school of Stallone, Seagal, and van Damme (sorry). The latter I can at least skip during the day, but late at night - good bye sleep.
Is it just me? :beg:

It's not just you Skip. Yesterday was ruined because of "The Secret of My Suce$s" with Michael J. Fox. [Stop Laughing]
Also, any Mel Brooks movie immediately hooks me, no matter how many times I've seen it before and Airplane! does it as well.
Further, I find that if I somehow catch "The Contender" on HBO, I'm stuck until Jeff Bridges address to the House. Great scene.
And of course, Caddyshack, Bull Durham and Major League also hold this power over me.

Most of these catch me, as well as any of the Star Wars movies.

The Producers seems to be always on...... I go nuts for that movie.
" Vat is dis bebby? Der feuhrer never said dis bebby."
Airplane 1 or 2 is another time stopper.
Spinal Tap....Fred Willard is awesome as the entertainment officer at the Air Force base.." I love your music. Not yours in particular, but the whole genre'".

Young Frankenstein, The Dirty Dozen, lots of Eastwood Western movies. Basically - a lot of the stuff that's on TBS.
Godfather Pt. I and II usually hook me in too.

Many of the movies mentioned here are good watches...Lethal Weapon is sort of a guilty pleasure movie.
If it's on TV or if I'm just lounging at someone's house, I'll always suggest putting on The Matrix.

I watched The Outlaw Josey Wales instead of the NFL yesterday too.
Hell, just in the Eastwood category, there's Unforgiven, Kelly's Heroes, TG,TB&TU, Fistful of Dollars, High Plains Drifter, Heartbreak Ridge, Absolute Power and several others.
Apollo 13 is another I'll never miss, along with the rare Repo Man sightings and The Dirty Dozen.
I try only to flip between sports on Sundays so I don't fall into this trap.
Hoosiers got me the other night. Great movie.

Caddyshack, Stripes, and Patton. Love watching George kicking ass for three hours.
Bull Durham is rather lame on TV. Too much good stuff edited out, like the language......

"Say Anything" is one of the all time greats -- "I don't want to sell anything, buy anything or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought or processed, or repair anything sold, bought or processed--you know--as a career."
A movie I was stuck on that used to run all the time is Fast Forward. It's about a bunch of kids from Ohio who come to NYC to try to make it as dancers. Goofy movie, but every time it would come on, I felt compelled to watch it.

Imagine being terrorize by your paper boy! I can not say $2 without giggling! Never saw One Crazy Summer. Have to check it out. My daughter has a friend named Applionia (sp) wonder where her parents got that one.
Am I the only one who went through an ugly fashion trend after watching Purple Rain.

Not really my genre but I still think Purple Rain was the best album of the decade.
"One Crazy Summer" was almost the same movie as "Better Off Dead," although it wasn't a sequel or anything. It stars John Cusack and Demi Moore.
While on the topic of 80s teen movies..."Some Kind of Wonderful" was great.

You have to see One Crazy Summer if you liked Better Off Dead. At the time I first saw Better Off Dead, I was a paperboy ;)
I always wanted to ring the bell and just say I want my Two Dollars.

Is that the one to save a nursing home or something like that? I loved Some kind of Wonderful. I own that one.
I have not been to the movies in a long time and rarely ever watch the slew of movie channels we have on digital cable. My family will call me in and say....."Mom......Molly Ringworm is on again!" They know the ones I like. They laugh at the stuff I use to wear. The 80's are well captured.

When I think of the '80s, I always think of Gordon Gekko walking along the beach at sunrise carrying that ridiculously large cell phone and wearing those power shirts and power ties.
I don't like the movie, but I love the way fashion and technology move right along. Somehow, Kate Hepburn NEVER looked out of fashion.
How about the Rocky series? I through IV. Any of those can hook me in for a couple of hours. I say I through IV because Rocky V never happened right? right?

I figured Little China was one for me alone. I will claim Jerk and Wonka to be good movies; China is in the so bad its good category that is very individualized.

Nah, that falls under the categories of

and
'movies you ask your guests if they have seen it and if not, force them to'
