My mother-in-law :D found this at a garage sale and I had a chance to reread it over the weekend. A couple of thoughts...

They must have really rushed this to press because the book ends after the Tigers clinch the AL East. No World Series, no playoffs.

No one besides Willie Hernandez had a career year for the Tigers. The starting pitching was good not great. The bullpen really saved their bacon that year. Hernandez pitched 140 innings, Lopez pitched 137 and Doug Bair pitched 93. That's a lot of innings from your top three relievers.

Sparky may not have been the best strategist but he may have been the best player's manager ever. He seemed to be able to motivate just about everyone. The part about him using Rose as a example was interesting. He knew Rose could take it and used Rose as an example because everyone else admired how hard he worked.

Geez, like I didn't hear "Bless you boys" enough back in 1984. ;)

I have to do something with my time. Watching the Tigers isn't cutting it.
