saw this in the NY Times the other day. another baseball fan is born.....
At the "Baseball as America" exhibit gift shop at the American Museum of Natural History, a boy about 4 and his father are standing before a large selection of Mets and Yankees baseball hats.
Boy: "Daddy, I want a baseball hat."
Father: "O.K., son, pick which team you want. Do you want a Mets hat or a Yankees hat?"
Everyone in the gift shop turns to look at the child about to make a team commitment for life. This is the moment in which a New York crosstown rival is born.
Long pause from the child, with the surrounding buyers on their toes awaiting the outcome of this magical moment. The father is allowing the child to make his own decision.
Boy: "I want a Mets hat."
The gift shop erupts with cheers. A new Mets fan is born. One man yells out, "I feel like I'm at a christening; that was wonderful!" Another man says, "Good choice, young man!"
I walk over and high-five the child, happy he is now a fellow Met fan and preparing him for the potential heartache of the future. I hope he never forgets this moment that his team loyalty was born. Larry Struber
