It’s Saturday and baseball is being played. YES! Welcome to what Will refers to as the “Saturday Showcase”. I personally like to refer to it as the “Best Damn UTK Report Period”. Oh wait, was that a little over the top? Either way, let’s get this party started!
I’d like to thank everyone who has been emailing me through out the week to check on how I’m feeling. I have been activated from the dreaded DL. I’m not back to my full “Power”, but it’s only a matter of time. And let me say this, Moving SUCKS!! As Will had mentioned last night, I have spent this weekend moving to a new and improved location. Next time I move, I will be offering UTK prizes for any assistance I can receive. Everyone please email Will and tell him that he should have helped!
OK, so as I’m taking a break from unpacking I read about Yankees pitcher, David Wells referring to He Who Shall Not Be Named (shhh, don’t say Selig outloud) as a “knucklehead”. Now, I’m not saying that I disagree with him. I guess I just found the term “knucklehead” amusing. It is NOT the word that comes to mind when I think of him. He claims that this agreement is historic, but that is yet to be seen. He strolls in two days before the strike date and acts as if he saved the day. Where was he the rest of the time?? He has that magic power to make things all better. Why didn’t he do it sooner? Does he not know the damage that baseball has taken in the past few months just from threatening to strike? Ummm, clue phone Bud. Fans are annoyed to say the least!! We have the right to be. Baseball is supposed to be a game for the “people”. Ok, so WHO is actually thinking about the people??? Do they actually think that simply continuing to play baseball aka continuing to do their JOB is all we deserve? If the players and the owners can both take the “what’s in it for me?” attitude, the fans can too.
By the way, let me remind everyone that as of tomorrow teams can expand their rosters. So, we’ll naturally see a lot of players called up from the minor leagues. If anyone with any sort of power in the Cubs organization is reading, CALL ORIE UP!!!! With the way the Cubs are playing today, what harm could it really do?
Let’s go to something fun. That’s right! It’s trivia time. We’ll start with this past week’s trivia question. Courtesy of Will, the question was - In 1959, a game won by Hoyt Wilhelm was delayed for 28 minutes by what? For a bonus, what got the game going again? The answer which was correctly answered first by “A Reader To Be Named Later” was gnats and it was started again by fireworks.
Tonight’s question is – What player had 363 lifetime wins and 363 career hits? If you know the answer, as always send me an email. Good Luck!!
And on to the news…
The Cubs played a doubleheader against the Cardinals today. They were making up a postponed game from earlier this season when Cardinals pitcher, Darryl Kile, died the night before. You would think that the Cubs could have managed to win one of these games, but they didn’t. Unfortunately, Cubs pitcher, Mark Prior not only got the loss, but he also got injured. Prior suffered a strained left hamstring and had to leave the game after the fifth inning. No word on how severe the injury is, but given the Cubs current standings there is no real need to rush his recovery. The Cubs also activated pitcher, Jason Bere to start the second game this evening. Bere had been on the DL since June 27th due to a serious knee contusion. To make room for Bere, the Cubs sent down Carlos Zambrano to AAA-Iowa. Instead of playing Where’s Waldo, people are going to start playing Where’s Sammy. He’s still not playing, but shouldn’t the Cubs be able to win games even without him?
Ken Griffey Jr sat out a second game in a row tonight. It’s good to give him a rest given that he hasn’t been 100 percent since coming back from his injury, but is this really the wisest time to do it?
Shane Spencer of the Yankees left today’s game in the third due to a stiff left hamstring. It was apparently not a good day for hamstrings around the majors. Juan Rivera replaced him for the rest of the game. Robin Ventura also sat out today’s game due a sore back.
There seems to be a flu running wild through the Brewers dugout. The most recent victim is Eric Young who is currently day to day. I swear that I did not give them my tonsilitis! The Brewers also decided to play Let’s Make A Deal today. They traded Mark Loretta to the Houston Astros for cash and two players to be named later. This will be an adjustment for Loretta who has played his entire career so far with the Brewers. I’m thinking he’s gonna miss the Sausage Races the most!
The Tigers have activated Ramon Santiago for Sunday’s game. He’s still not fully recovered, but is able to hit from the right side without any pain. The Tigers plan to use him from the right until he’s able to once again switch hit. Wendell Magee, who hasn’t played since Monday, is scheduled to have surgery on his right big toe this coming Wednesday. It’s unsure if he’ll miss the rest of the season.
The Twins have Eric Milton scheduled to make his first start after having left knee surgery back on August 8th this Monday against Seattle. The Twins also recently called up Michael Cuddyer from AAA-Edmonton to complete their current roster. Second baseman, Denny Hocking also missed tonight’s game due to the flu. I must have been more contagious then I realized.
For my “Who To Watch” player tonight, it’s gotta be Adam Eaton of the Padres who will make his first start of the season tomorrow against the Rockies. Eaton had Tommy John surgery in August of last year. It’ll be interesting to see how he looks on the mound tomorrow. I hope he has great success. That’s certainly not an easy injury to come back from.
Joe Kennedy, who is third in the majors for complete games this season missed tonight’s game to give his throwing arm a rest. Do we wonder why the Devil Rays are struggling when they are pushing a twenty three year old pitcher this hard? The boy is T-I-R-E-D!!
This Just In! The Brewers have activated pitcher, Nick Neugebauer in time to start tomorrow against the Reds. I had the chance to see Neugebauer pitch here with the Indy Indians. He looked good and ready to throw hard and fast!
Let me just say “Wow”. The A’s have just won their 17th consecutive game. Can we say “SMOKIN’”?? This many games have not been won in a row since the Phillies did it in 1931. That makes for some good baseball.
Alrighty Folks, that’s it for me tonight! I hope you have enjoyed this installment of UTK. Remember my rule – Complaints go to Will. Compliments go to Rachael. Have a great Labor Day Weekend! Be Safe & Play Fair!!
