This is rubbing it in. They could have waited another 2-3 weeks and still had tons of time. I now hope they become the biggest collapse of all-time.

M's can start selling playoff tickets
Associated Press
SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners have been been told by Major League Baseball that they can start selling tickets to potential home games for the 2001 playoffs.
There could be as many as 10 playoff games at Safeco Field.
The tickets would be for an AL division series, the AL championship series and the World Series.
The Mariners announced Friday night that their season ticket holders would be offered a chance to buy playoff tickets in full strips for the entire postseason. The team said information on single game tickets for sale to the general public will be announced after the Mariners clinch a playoff berth.
The Mariners held an 18-game lead over Oakland in the AL West going into Friday night's game against the Chicago White Sox.
Ticket prices for all postseason games at Safeco will be $35 and $50 for the division series, $65 and $85 for the ALCS and $125 and $175 for the World Series.
The Mariners said a nonrefundable service fee of $35 will be charged on full strip ticket orders to cover the handling costs.

Well, it does seem rather quick, but there's no question about them making the playoffs... unless they suddenly drop dead and lose continuously for the rest of the season. :D
Is a fan of the defending WS champs a little nervous about Seattle in the playoffs?? Hmmmmm? ;) :loud:

:loud: Not nervous - anything can happen in the post season. They're all good teams for the most part. Much of it depends on who's hot or cold.
As far as the Yanks in the post-season, this could be interesting - - - -
say Oakland wins the wildcard and NY the East, and the M's the ALDS and someone from the NL West wins the NL. That means the Yanks will have to go West three times in a month:
v. OAK in the ALDS
v. SEA in the ALCS
v. LA/SF or ARZ in the WS
That's a killer for an old team like NY. Now, that derserves a "Hmmmmmmmmm?" ;)

I don't see why it should upset anyone that Seattle is selling their play off tix already the chances are more than good they will make the play offs but if I where to buy any tickets I wouldn't buy any for the world series that is unless they're good at Yankee stadium. The road to the tittle goes through NY.

Don't go counting them chickens yet. I would not want to face Oakland in the playoffs.

Eddie - good to see you. Been a while.
Eddie/Buzz - - you guys know how this goes. In the end, it comes down to rotations. It's Hudson, Mulder, Zito v. Garcia, Sele, Moyer v. Clemens, Petitte, Mussina.
Should be fun to watch.

As to the original subject, it does seem a bit early to sell playoff tickets. Until they officially clinch, it is too early. Bad karma, too.

Yeah, they could've waited, but why bother?
Say that they have 15,000 season ticket holders. They can buy a strip of 3 ALDS tickets, 4 ALCS tickets, and 3 WS tickets. Taking the midpoints of the ranges quoted in the article, the M's take in 3 x $42.50 + 4 x $75 + 3 x $150 + $35 handling = $912.50 per strip. So with 15,000 season ticket holders, they take in $13,687,500.
Now, let's say they pull the greatest collapse of all time and miss the postseason. Then they have to mail back all but the handling fees, i.e., all but $525,000.
Now, let's assume they get 4% interest (daily compounding).
Funds received start of August: $13,687,500
Interest for August $46,577
Interest for September $45,255
Funds returned $13,162,500
Money left in the bank $616,832
Now, if they show some reserve and wait a month:
Funds received start of September: $13,687,500
Interest for September $45,072
Funds returned $13,162,500
Money left in the bank $570,072
Profit from taking ticket orders in August instead of September: $46,760
That probably pays the salaries of two front-office secretaries for a year. Or Ichiro for a game and a third.

Believe it or not - THAT pisses people off. I recall someone talking about the Knicks doing this too. Folks figure: I'd rather have my money working for me than them. Why must I tie it up with them? I will buy the tickets - but, do I have to commit so early?
Not saying this is me - but, I have heard it.

It'll be interesting, if the Indians make it to the playoffs, what their front 3 will look like. Colon's there, but aside from him, Sabathia's been the only decent pitcher in their rotation. Who's left? Chuck Finley? Dave Burba? Charles Nagy? Yech.
That As rotation is pretty good, and right behind the Yankees. As for Seattle, Garcia's shown he's got #1 stuff, and Moyer's always reliable, but Sele's still a question mark. His peripheral numbers aren't great, and if I remember right, neither is his postseason record.

Last night, Jim Kaat on MSG said in a A's/M's match up - with all due respect to the M's record - he's taking Oakland.
The M's are on pace to win 117 - - which would be a record. It will also be added pressure to win the whole thing - or else no one will care how many games they won. Some may even discount it as a result of the unbalanced schedule.

Here's the rub on playoff tickets. This is my experience with the NY Jets, but think it applies to most professional teams/sports at least for season ticket holders.
Quite often, before the Jets clinch, I need to decide whether or not I want to pay for playoff tix. If the Jets fail to make the playoffs or make it through only one round, what is paid for but not played gets applied to next season's ticket cost for the regular season. The only way I can recover that money is to cancel my season tix and that is not right. The Jets get the float on my money.

What a terrible practice. I've never heard of that before - may just be a Jets or NFL thing? Ever try and fight it? A nasty letter, at the least, is in order.
It's like going to a restaurant, getting a meal that sucks, and the management says, don't worry about this one, we're going to keep the charge on your credit card, but, the next time you come in, we'll apply it to your next bill.
Shoot, there may even be a law against this?

Well, that sure is sleazier than what the M's are doing. At Mariners fans will get to see at least some postseason gaems.

If you fight, scream, scratch, claw, you can get a refund, but it does not show up until the next season money is due. Odd coincidence.
Could be a result of the Jets, like most NFL teams, are sold out to season ticket holders during the reg. season. The are no such thing as single game tickets for the Jets and Giants for that matter. They do it because they can.

NY/NJ sports fans are really hosed because of the waiting lists.
I JUST heard that Seattle - the M's - are selling tickets on-line over face value - as much as $100 over face value. Isn't there a word for that?

I call it stupidity--on the part of those paying $100 over face value.
