Looking for books and articles with a stronger focus on the players' perspective--i.e., not stuff like "Lords of the Realm". Trying to sort out who the pioneers and activists have been. (Monte Ward/Curt Flood/Robin Roberts I know about.) Any era from 19th C to 80s collusion. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!

Try "A Whole Different Ball Game - The Sport and Business of Baseball" by Marvin Miller.

Any good 19th century work has some good labor stuff.

"The Beer and Whiskey League" has a Player's League chapter.

This would be my choice, at least for the most recent era, since about 1969.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've come across a couple of other books that may be useful (haven't looked at them yet):

Never Just a Game: Players, Owners, and American Baseball to 1920, by Robert F. Burk.

Much More than a Game: Players, Owners, and American Baseball since 1921, also by Burk.

Both are published by U of North Carolina Press.
