View Full Version : Win A NetShrine Cap!

Max Power

First one to figure out who this guy is, wins a black NetShrine Cap.

The city I was born in, and the city I first played in, start with the same letter. I had 4 good years in the 2nd city where I played. But, in the 3rd city where I played, two teammates would go on to have a very bad break.

Who Am I?

This could be like "What's My Line..." (That's six down and four to go, Arlene Francis...).

Can we have a hint...

Is the "Bad-Break team" the 93-94 Reds of Smiley and Browning?

Oooh. Chris - the 93 Indians? Ouch - that was a bad break! Technically, since Crews and Olin never played in but 2 or 3 spring games together, were they really teammates yet? I don't know....

KCBOOMER

Can't be the '93 Tribe because none of the players on that team meets the other criteria and surely Steve wouldn't have a contest in such poor taste.

We think, at least....

does his frame of reference go back to the 60's?

Max Power
08-07-2002, 05:07 PM
Boomer - the breaks were bad - that bad - but, that's not the center of the contest, just a clue, so, I think it's not a bad taste thing..................

Smed - yes.

Last clue - - someone with the same name of this player last played 4 years before he did, and he was 10 years his senior.

Good luck to all - - I'll only ring in when I see the right answer - - so, keep firing away ya'll................

Obviously it wasn't him because I had not seen the last clue. :)

The '93 Indians were the first place I started looking, but as Boomer noted above, none of them fit the description. Man, this one is bugging me. I'm not going to be able to get any work done until I figure it out.:headwall:

When you talk about the first city you play in, are you talking about the first major league city?

It was when you mentioned that it was as bad as what happened to the Indians. I thought Bostock.

Didn't Thompson die of leukemia and not a blow or shot to the head? And I was thinking of the same SEASON the guy joined the team.

Thompson died of leukemia.

It's not a shot to the head, but how can one not call dying of leukemia at the age of 29 a bad break?

I was thinking of Steve's clue about "Head Cells", but now a giant trout was slapped across my face and I get it now.

Never in a million years would I have thought of Johnny Briggs, and I even remember him. Pretty good hitter for the Phillies and Brewers, here's his page at baseball-reference.com if you want a look:

Smed - Head Cells............

Head = John
Cells = Briggs (sic)

Get another fish from the freezer............. ;)

That's even MOOOORE of a stretch.

I was thinking cells as in "white blood cells" and head, where Bostock's bullet landed. Probably not the most tasteful thing, but I was concentrating on the two players stricken by tragedy, not the player to be named.

I think I'll go meander back and complain about the Cubs some more.....

I thought of Bostock too but couldn't find any teammates that fit the criteria.:splat:

Me too.

That "Head Cells" clue threw me, but it was actually really clever. I just wasn't thinking on that level.
