Welcome to another Saturday edition of UTK!
I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to email me and check on my day to day status throughout this week. I’m happy to report that I am recovering and am currently available for pinch-hitting.
For those of you who have seen the movie, Clerks, you will find humor in the conversation that I had with my mother earlier today. As we were discussing last night’s Cubs game, my mother asked, “what’s the status of that guy who had that bad injury?” Now, I had no idea who my mother was referring to, but she couldn’t seem to tell me who she was asking about. “You know, he hurt his ankle or his knee while sliding. It looked really bad. I think he plays in the American League, but I could be wrong.” I’d like to point out that my Mother is no stranger to baseball. She’s been a fan of baseball much longer then I’ve even been alive. So, I found it amusing that I would have such a conversation such as this with her. I was unable to determine what player she was referring to. So, in closing, my Mother said to me “Ask Will. He’ll know.” Thus, we should all be thankful that Will created Under The Knife. And I am reminded why I’m happy that I’m not in retail anymore. “Do you have that movie with that one guy?”
Now I have a trivia question for everyone. Name the Hall of Fame pitcher who struck out 12 consecutive times one season – the official number of times he went to the plate. (on the mound he won four strikeout titles) If you know the answer, email me at bunnybams@aol.com
A quick trade rumor before we get to the injuries has Kenny Rogers of Texas for Tim Redding of Houston. Sounds like they are playing Let’s Make A Deal down in Texas.
The Rocket has been sent to the DL. ROGER CLEMENS was placed on the 15 Day due to his strained right groin. The Yankees were really hoping that they wouldn’t have to do it, but hopefully he’ll return by the end of the month. RAUL MONDESI who took a brutal hit against the wall last night will be sitting out a game or two. He reports to be rather banged up and sore, but will hopefully feel better by this coming week. Has anyone asked Mondesi if hitting the wall might hurt more then getting hit by one of the Rocket’s pitches?
KEN GRIFFEY JR is going to be out at least another ten days. The Reds are hoping for his return around August 1st at the latest. GABE WHITE has a broken toe and has been placed on the 15 Day DL. This puts the Reds in a tough spot when it comes to left-handed relievers. The Reds do have Bruce Chen who has been doing a fairly nice job lately, but they’ll be feeling the loss of White while he’s on the DL.
Speaking of pitchers, Will made mention of GREG MADDUX being day to day due to his strained left calf. Maddux is reporting that he is feeling better and that he is hopeful that he won’t have to miss any starts. I personally think that the Braves need to be careful with Greg right now. They’ll need him in top shape if they’re gonna have any Series hopes this season.
DENNIS COOK of the Anaheim Angels may find himself at the end of his baseball career. He has a torn labrum in his left shoulder and is out indefinitely. He’s been considering retirement after this season and now may not have any choice.
DAMIAN MILLER who left last night’s game due to back spasms is out of tonight’s game. Rod Barajas is catching in his place while he’s out. I’ve yet to read if the Dbacks have any decent catching prospects down in Triple A, but it may be something they want to consider.
BOBBY ESTALELLA of the Colorado Rockies may go on the DL. He hasn’t been able to swing the bat in a week due to a sore left shoulder. If you can’t swing, you certainly can’t hit.
One final injury for me tonight. Can we guess what position it is? Yep, it’s another pitcher. GRANT ROBERTS went on the 15 Day due to tendinitis in his right shoulder. Roberts has been suffering off and on with a sore shoulder and is hoping that this rest will allow him to get healthy again.
That’s it for me tonight gang. As always, I hope you’ve enjoyed the Saturday edition. If you’re looking for some great baseball discussions, head over to Netshrine.com. Will and I can both be found over there if you have any comments or questions.
