I'm looking for a comphrensive biography of Christy Mathewson, something in the nature of "Cobb" by Al Stump. Any suggestions?

Ray Robinson wrote one called Matty back in the mid-90s. It's not great - mainly due to Robinson's writing - but it's probably the best "outside" look at Mathewson.

I think Max's recommendation is a good one, since it gives you the scoop from the inside. Reading the two in tandem might give you a pretty full picture of Matty.

"Pitching in a Pinch," the book Mathewson wrote himself, gives insight to the man.

Ah, that was Max's link. You gotta give the title, son!

Matty has not been given the full treatment yet{Robinsons bio was soft}. Th novelTHE CELEBRANT semed to capture Matty and his times better then The robinson bio.Pitching in a pinch is fine...

I've been surprised by the lack of coverage that Matty has received, but I appreciate the suggestions and will give them a look. :)

I say this without having read it, but Alexander's bio of John McGraw would likely deal extensively with Matty.

Matthewson was so well spoken and thoughful, and his book was so great, I think many have shied away from him.

There are many many books discussing the McGraw Giants, and of course, Matty is a central figure on those teams.

Stay away from any of the biographies written about Matty during the 50s or 60s - they are all fluff
