Just killed off "Sleeper Cars and Flannel Uniforms : A Lifetime of Memories from Striking Out the Babe to Teeing It Up With the President" by Elden Auker

Very quick read - you could do the whole book one day at the beach or a couple of evenings at home with no sweat. Still, very entertaining - - great old time baseball stories on the likes of Ruth, Williams, Joe D and many others like Foxx, and Gehrig and Cochrane, etc.

Highly recommended for a true baseball fan.

Also finished ZIM: A Life In Baseball by Don Zimmer. Very good too. Spans his WHOLE career - - man, that guy was all over the place - you forget about that - Bklyn, LA, Cubs, Cincy, SD, SF, Boston, NY - you name it. Reads just as if Zimmer was talking to you on the street.

Such a coincidence you start a thread on this, because recently I've been surfing some bookstore web sites, mainly Barnes & Noble, for some baseball titles. I'm a big reader, but am in desperate need of a trip to the bookstore! My list of titles is pretty lengthy.

I was reading Where They Ain't, a book about the first Baltimore Orioles, which eventually became the New York Yankees. This was during the times of Wee Willie Keeler, John McGraw, etc. (both were members of the Big Four at that time). I was reading it a couple of months ago, misplaced it, and didn't look for it for awhile. I found it today and am trying to find where I left off. Good book so far, though! :)

Jessica - thanks for the tip. I just started:

Jocks and Socks: Inside Stories from a Major-League Locker Room
by Jim Ksicinski

It seems to be very promising. So far, I like it a lot.

All right, it's not a book (I apologize for this sidenote, Net), but there's an article in this month's Details magazine about Cuban prospects (talks about Hernandez, among others) and what they go through to make it to the majors...it's a pretty decent article, just a bit depressing for the average American 40 hour a week worker...I suggest you pick it up...Ummm, I'm not sure of the month of the magazine, it's the one with Vince Vaughn on the cover (Hey, why do you think I picked it up?! ;) )

I wish that MAXIM did baseball stories - - it would give an "excuse" for "having to buy it" :D
