CINCINNATI - Cardinals righthander Garrett Stephenson will be sidelined until at least mid-August after undergoing surgery Thursday for removal of a mass from his left leg, Cardinals general manager Walt Jocketty said.
Calling the procedure a "minor exploratory surgery" for a "very, very odd injury," Jocketty said the procedure was performed to relieve pressure in Stephenson's leg.
The mass was discovered with magnetic resonance imaging this week.
Jocketty referred medical questions to Dr. George Paletta, the team doctor who performed the procedure. Paletta could not be reached Thursday.
Stephenson returned to the disabled list Tuesday after experiencing severe pain in his left leg in a bullpen session at Busch Stadium on Sunday.
Jocketty said the mass was noncancerous but added that Stephenson will require significant recovery time. Saying he did not expect the surgery to be season-ending, Jocketty forecast six weeks of rest for Stephenson before he will resume a throwing program.
Stephenson missed all of last season after elbow-ligament replacement surgery. He is on the disabled list for the second time this season. Hamstring problems that began in spring training contributed to back spasms that shut him down following an April 14 start.
