View Full Version : Let's Make A Deal!!!

Time to lighten up and have fun with a game. Here's the rules. We all know our teams very well and know the players who have not panned out the way we had hoped. Well, in this game you can offer up one of your garbage player, dress him up and put a positive spin with the hopes someone will scoop him up him up to unload one of their garbage players.
To qualify as a garbage player they a.) must be on the active roster and ....stink, b.) they must be on your personal favorite club, c.) you must accept the person before your garbage to post in this thread and offer an equally bad player.
I will start by offering Rich Garcis aka El Guapo! According to the press he lost 25-35 pounds during the off season. Along the way of the 25-35 pound weight loss he has lost the plate in more ways than one. The Soxs are placing him on the 15 day DL. Don't worry he is not hurt. He has 15 days to find the 25-35 pounds that he has lost and along the way may find the home plate too.
I think he would be a wonderful addition to anyone's club. He sure can fill a big hole in someone's bull pen.
Any takers? Come on "Let's make a deal!!": Someone take my:guapo: :guapo: please!!

I would gladly trade Rich Garces for....Gerald Williams!
Gerald, a star of the Yankee minor league system, is a bonafide winner and a contributor towards several Championship teams. He can play a variety of positions, including LF, RF, CF, and Bench. And, honestly, with a nickname like "Ice," how can he not be good?
SmedIndy
06-03-2002, 11:51 PM
Hey, I'd take Ice Williams for....
Todd Hundley...
He's a catcher, and everyone needs a catcher right? He can hit some long flys, draw some walks, and can put on the tools of ignorance for a while. And his Dad was a real gamer.
And you can put him in LF and he can try real hard, too...

We have Todd Hundley on the block. Any takers? This one is ripe for the picking!!:D
johnny
06-04-2002, 12:29 AM
I'll take Todd Hundley for........Shane Spencer!
He has championship experience, had an incredible call-up a few years ago, has post-season success ( ), and the kids just love him! His batting average is above .200, and he has some pop that just might surface again really soon. Imagine him batting behind your favorite slugger!
And...he's strong:D
calexpat
06-04-2002, 01:14 AM
Okay, you give me Spencer, I'll give you...JT Snow! Ignore the sub-.250 batting average for the past two seasons and the steady decline from average to non-existent power, all from a first baseman. Snow has a lot going for him:
--he draws walks
--he's a great fielder
--he's a handsome man
--he's quite possibly the only baseball player to be featured in an ad in the Financial Times

This is what kills me about the White Sox. They actually have talent! I wouldn't trade anyone for that pile of doo doo. In the spirit of things I give you Bobby Howry.
WiredTiger
06-04-2002, 09:28 AM
Jt Snow will get you ..... Lima Time from Detroit. Have fun.
PoorMe beat me to JT so I get howry for Lima! Have fun Chicago.

06-04-2002, 09:31 AM
But I'll give up Ramiro Mendoza for JT Snow.
Tired of him being either hurt or to fragile to do a dmned thing.
i'm begining to think his acheivements have been more of 'right place, right time" moments
TimmyB
06-04-2002, 11:14 AM
Sure, I'll take Mendoza for... Tony Clark.
Strong points:
1) He's batting over .200 from the right side
2) He hit a home run Opening Day -- always good entertainment for fans to get in the "Opening Day" spirit
3) He is very tall, making him handy at first base
4) Seems like a genuinely nice guy (and really, what team can't use more nice guys?) (in all seriousness, I really hope he can turn things around -- but, in the mean- time... takers anyone?)
SmedIndy
06-04-2002, 11:21 AM
Can I make another deal? I'll take Tony Clark for Delino Deshields.
Hey, he's still fast, and you can stand him at second, third, and left field and he'll look like a big league player. Plus he wears his socks like Jackie Robinson did.
Rajah
06-04-2002, 01:49 PM
I'll take Delino Deshields for....
Keith Lockhart!
Keith is a career minor leaguer!
Bobby Cox loves him!
No one knows why!

I don't think anyone's that desperate to drop their garbage
I figured someone might want castilla or franco or helms or furcal or lopez. But lockhart. :fart: :stinker:
hmrsf
06-04-2002, 11:51 PM
No takers for Lockheart?
Have we reached the bottom of the barrel?
I think we can go much lower!:D

Fine. I will throw in Marvin Benard. Just recently maligned in a thread on this very board.
This utility outfielder is making starters money, but look past the contract:
-Marvin has "doubles plus" power.
-He's sort of fast.
-His take on reading fly balls is "interesting."

he can fill the Grand Canyon, but that doesn't mean I want him on my team! ;) :D
I tried to play HM -- but any player I would want gone is already gone and a step up from Lockheart...although if Wells doesn't lay off the bean dip soon, I may revisit this...
Smed -- you may have given up on Hundley too soon -- didn't he actually homer last night? maybe you put the reverse hex on him! :D

Pushing this one up....
We have Marvin Benard, any takers? The Yankee and Sox are well represented........lets hear from a few other teams, show us your garbage!!:D

Bernard is a big improvement over Lockhart.
Bernard: 686 ops
Lockhart: 487 ops
ENJOY!

AS hmrsf points out, the Yankees are taken care of, so I'll put on my green hat today. I'll offer up one slightly used John Mabry. He's well travelled and like new!

Andy -- good trade under the deadline :D didn't realize you had a direct pipeline to George/Brian/Joe et al :D ...thankfully, he really is off the roster...and don't offer to trade Juan Rivera -- i'm excited to see this kid and hope he plays tonight!!
JamesI
06-05-2002, 04:28 PM
I'll take Mabry for Jerry Hairston!
Come on, I'm sure everyone wants a 2nd baseman who can steal 30 bases a year, bat .220 if your lucky and make more errors than Soriano!
satchel
06-05-2002, 05:41 PM
Hairston ... *shudder*
Rajah
06-05-2002, 05:55 PM
Jerry Hairston: 649 ops
Lockhart: 487 ops
My garbage is still the worst!
Can you tell I don't like Lockhart much?
SmedIndy
06-05-2002, 10:50 PM
Yeah, but Lockhart's a "proven veteran..." :D
hmrsf
06-05-2002, 11:11 PM
Hairston is on the table. Come on guys show your garbage!!
As we start scaping the bottom of the barrel, you guys need to dress up these players better!!
Gosfgiants
06-05-2002, 11:12 PM
I think Lockhart is still on the Braves cause of the problems that the Braves have had keeping middle infielders healthy. See one Blauser, Jeff. Last year it was Furcal that got hit. This year it's Marcus Giles. As long as MI keep getting hurt, Lockhart will be there.

06-05-2002, 11:21 PM
:whip: Never thought I was going to have to say this.......this is a game not a debate on the merits of these God awful player.
So no comments unless you are picking up garbage and unloading.
Simple people like me are easily confused. :D
Fresh Hairston here, get your ripe Hairston here!
For those of you who feel the need to quantify how bad these players are we can have Lee do a game wrap up.

Oh how I would take Hairston for our sack 2B Ricky Gutierrez. Why, I just can't seem to remember who our 2B was last year.....Sandy Alomar has a brother, what?
The deal on Ricky:
2 HR
9 RBI
.280 OBP
.294 SLG
Come on! How can you go wrong with such middle infield strength like Goots can bring????
hmrsf
06-06-2002, 10:14 PM
Will someone take my Gutierrez please?:beg:
SmedIndy
06-06-2002, 10:44 PM
We already had that model of Gutierrez. Reminded me of the Jackie Gutierrez model.

Pushing this one up! I forgot all about this game. For the rules see first post. You can not pick anyone who has already been on the block. To play you must take Rickey Gutierrez

Sorry, the Reds just got rid of Wilton Guerrero.
How about Juan Castro?
Duque
07-13-2002, 03:14 PM
I wouldn't hesitate to trade Gutierrez for Alberto Castillo! One of the best throwing arms in the game! A reputedly great defensive catcher! Some have even compared him to a Wendy Plug and Play blow-up doll!

Where's Craig S. or Glndwr? Joe Lawrence wins this contest, even if the trophy would clang off his hands...
CpUltravox
07-18-2002, 10:13 AM
Hey! No fair! Wasn't Castillo released?
I go back to Gutierrez then....
If I want a talent like Ricky Gutierrez, I feel obligated to give you top-shelf talent in return. And who screams top shelf talent more than our Montreal Expos' own, Wilfredo Cordero. You may have had him earlier this year Cleveland, but it's different now.
Yes, kid tested and mother approved (or is that Kix? I guess I meant Bonifay Tested, Hart Approved) for extreme offensive and defensive spiffiness, this selfless utility player is experienced defensively at 6... yes 6! positions (1B, 2B, SS, 3B, LF, RF), and stands forever as proof that you can stand between 2nd and 3rd, but that doesn't make you a shortstop. Often the subject of many philosphical questions (such as, if the ball clangs off the shortstop's glove in Montreal, and no official scorer bothers to show up - or is on some French Canadian bender - is it still an error?), Cordero is both an enigma to intellectuals and a solution to your team's woes.
Also... a proven "Professional hitter" with warning track power (Hey- that ball was out of the kingdome), Cordero brings a feisty nature that can't be taught to both his personal and professional life (ask his wife).
AND... IF YOU ACT NOW.... we'll throw in the Andres Galarraga "platoon upgrade pack" at no extra charge. That's right, TWO proven veteran professional hitters for the price of just Ricky Gutierrez.
Act Now!

Perfect!! Wil Cordero/ Galarraga combo deal is on the trading block! Not a bad combo deal. Top shelf crap!!!
BTW, let Will answer the phone.
TimmyB
07-18-2002, 11:06 AM
Hmm... interesting combo.
Most everyone is Boston hates Wil Cordero... but the "Big Cat"... interesting...
He'd be an upgrade for parts of our revolving firstbasemen.
Since we got rid of Tony Clark in a previous deal, let's do this: we take the Big Cat and Cordero (who will be promptly overrun by a gang of enraged fans, bound, gagged and thrown off the Tobin Bridge) for Jose Offerman.
Here he is folks, in the winter of 1998, this was the player Dan Duquette said would replace Mo Vaughn's OPB (Dan must have been looking forward to Mo, circa 2002).
He's a Jose-of-some-trades -- he can play 2nd, 1st, and has even been spotted on occassion in the OF. Will occassionaly hit with power and will occassionaly field with competence. What team couldn't use an upgrade like this?
KCBOOMER
07-18-2002, 11:39 AM
Well I've waited as long as I can. I think you guys are sufficiently softened so I can unload the Royals main piece of crap: Neifi Perez. If I have to take Offerman so be it.
CpUltravox
07-18-2002, 11:47 AM
Boom, you're supposed to sell "Top shelf defensive SS with a cannon arm, "Neifi Perez""
Once hit .320 in his home park, and can bring that talent to you!
hmrsf
07-18-2002, 02:25 PM
Neifti Perez.......that is some good stuff, man. He won't stay around long:rolleyes:
Great chance to unload, all you have to do is take Neifti!
All right! I get Neifi!
You, my friends, can now be the proud owner of Harry Carey's all-time favorite name - "Mark Grud... Mark Grudz... Mark... hey Steve, how do you say this kid's name again?"
Grudz and his .623 OPS are on the board.
(As an aside, we have a nickname in my house for Keith Lockhart. As this is a family website, I can't go into it, but I'll tell you that it involves a goat. We figure he has pictures of Bobby Cox, a goat, and some underage young ladies, thus explaining his spot on the roster.)
