(Take These Broken) Red Wings or (Rock You Like a) Hurricane?

Which one will hoist the cup?

Dominic Hasek is one of the top goaltenders ever. Carolina is going to be hard pressed to score. I think it'll be Detroit in 6.

Red Wings - likely in 4, maybe 5 if Carolina can steal a win. I think the Finals were already played between Detroit and Colorado.

I'd guess Detroit in 5 or 6 which seems to be pretty much the consensus of most I've read. As a related question from someone who doesnt follow hockey - will Bowman retire if he gets another Cup?

Skip - As someone who follows the game very closely, I probably have about as good an idea as you. The easy answer is that he'll leave because he has nothing left to prove, but that could have been said after the Wings' other Cup victories, too. My gut feeling tells me he'll leave now, though. I think he might feel like it's his time to step down, especially since the old warriors on the Wings are close to that point themselves.

Detroit easily unless they show up flat from the Av's series and can't get it together.

Detroit in 5. The Red Wings are too strong and too deep for Carolina to handle. The real question is will Hasek retire if he wins a cup?

Serious mistake here, Moose. Six games is okay, but the first "Mister" should actually be "Mr." - "Mr. Mister". Nothing less cool than a leather trenchcoat with the sleeves rolled up, as Richard Page proved in at least one of their videos.

To keep on topic, the 'Canes should be proud they even got this far.

Craig - why the $(#& do you know one of the guys from Mr. Mister by name, anyway? Next, you'll name everyone in a-Ha, and their second single off their "Hunting High and Low" record.

A sharp veer back on topic finds me still incapable of predicting Detroit to do anything but get set on fire on Haloween night.

Canes in seven. Seventh game double OT, with Ronnie Francis netting the winner.

Well, that was a seriously flat effort tonight from the Wings. I don't think they're in any kind of trouble, but I feel bad for their fans who attended the game. That had to be a pretty big letdown tonight.

One thing I'll say for Carolina - ever since his junior hockey days, I've admired Jeff O'Neill's lack of celebration when he scores. I like those guys who just act like it's no big deal, as compared to those players who act like every goal they score is a Cup-winner.

I still can not get over that these use to be the Hartford Whalers. They had some brutal games. Heavy on the fighting light on the scoring.

A part of me is pulling for the old Whalers.

If Colorado had beaten Detroit, we would have had the first-ever Cup final involving 2 teams with their roots in the WHA (Quebec-New England/Hartford).

What's funny to me is how alllllllllll season long the "fans" in NC hath doth forsaken the 'Canes. Play the Devils well in round 1, and all of a sudden Raleigh is a veritable HOTBED of hockey fans. All 3 home games sold out in 25 minutes in NC. I know...I tried.

Don't believe the hype that the 'Canes have a huge fan base now. Fans will only come out to see a winner. If they falter next year, back will be the days of walking up the night-of for a good seat.

I hope to God though the 'Canes win it. It would just be so cool down here to have Hockeytown up-ended by Mayberry! It would warm my heart to see the Cup on tour here, and I would reminisce about the nights when just 4,000 fans would see games when The Whale was here in Greensboro.

Heart - 'Canes in 7
Head - Wings in 5

Bandwagons are a funny thing. When teams are going good in Detroit it is almost impossible to get tickets. But when teams are just average there are a lot of casual fans who stay away. Tickets for the Red Wings are so expensive and so tough to get I don't even try anymore.

You mean $50 Stanley Cup tix in the worst nosebleeds doesn't entice you? $50!

Better than the $275 rinkside.

Absolutely insane...

For $275, you won't even get nosebleed seats at JLA, at least not in the playoffs.

I agree with that. $50 seats... I would pay that. I think the rinkside seats in Detroit are have a face value of $500 or more. And Standing room is probably $275.

Anybody else stay up to watch the game on Saturday? It was late in the EST Zone when larianov finally scored. That was one of the most exciting games I have seen. Detroit had a ton of chances to put the game away and didn't cash in. Too many goal posts and cross bars.

yes, despite my very early tee time. truly a great game. detroit owned OT1 and the first half of OT2. Carolina owned the second half of OT2. In OT3, it wasn't all Detroit, but more them. The Larionov scored on a nice move.

what a game!!!!!!!

I don't usually agree with Barry Melrose, but I do think this is one of the most boring Finals I've seen in quite some time. It's as bad as Stars-Sabres, and almost as bad as Avs-Panthers.

The overtime game the other night was exciting, but the style of play in regulation has been sleep-inducing. I don't blame the Canes - they're severely overmatched offensively, so they're trying to make this into a defensive, neutral-zone heavy series. It might work for them, but it doesn't work for fans of hockey. Without speed, the game loses most of its luster.

The Avs-Wings series was the best hockey I'd seen since the Olympics, so having the Canes in the final has been a slight letdown for me. No offense to the team or their fans - it's great for them and they should be happy.

I'm glad the Wings won both games in Carolina, because now they have a chance to win in front of the home crowd. With the lack of other good teams in Detroit over the past few years (although the Pistons are much-improved), it's good that the Wings continue to give Hockeytown something to cheer about.

The Joe should be rocking on Thursday. It'll be nice to see some of the guys who haven't hoisted the Cup do so.

I am starting my stumping for Conn Smythe... Federov. He gets so much crap in Detroit but he has been the best player on the ice for the Wings during the Playoffs.

I'm with you guys completely on this one. No NHL star takes more abuse than Federov. Here's a guy who has been giving a total effort in the playoffs, but who seems overlooked and underappreciated by everyone but us and Bill Clement.

He gets very little respect for a former MVP, and people still question his effort. I guess they forget about the fact that he accepted Bowman's request a few years ago to play defense when they needed him, and that it's often Sergei who gets that team going when they're struggling, usually through nothing more than hustle.

I hope he wins the Conn Smythe, but it's really a tough call. Yzerman has more points, and Hasek has the advantage of being the goalie, which is traditionally the first person voters seem to look at. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Federov.

WiredTiger

I am guessing that Hasek gets it. I am not sure if he has been the most valuable player for Detroit but he has been very good. The 6 shutouts are looking pretty darn good right now.

I mentioned Larionov because the voting is often finals-centric (where Hasek has been good, but not spectacular).

Seeing Federov, an unbelievably potent offensive player, go defensive in the name of the team, was truly inspiring.

I only wish it inspired the voters! But it will likely be Hasek, since everyone loves to talk about how goalies make such a difference in the playoffs. Obviously true, but it shouldn't rule out all the other players.

I'm convinced that Luc Robitaille is going to hoist the cup for the first time, I think Detroit's got this one wrapped up. I found it far from boring, I found it rather intriguing because you have the penultimate David and Goliath matchup...and boy has this David made things interesting. Carolina probably would've liked to have won the cup, but they've been in every game, save for the last one, but they gave probably 300% this postseason, and they just can't seem to muster enough to shock the world again.
I'm proud of the 'Canes for sticking in there and keeping things interesting. Which I can't say the Nets have done...:p

Living in the hockey bandwagon, er, "hotbed" that is North Carolina, I am glad to see the 'Canes make it to the finals, and was rather impressed they took Game 1 in Detroit.

However, there is no way that Carolina could have EVER kept up with the HOF team that the Red Wings are. I was just glad it wasn't a sweep.

As far as Conn Smythe, Fedorov doesn't have as many points as the others, but he is so impressive the way he is in the middle of just about every play! I vote Fedorov (although Hasek will probably get it).

Now if I could just get my boyhood home state's Blue Jackets in the Finals.....

A bounce in game 2, a bounce in game 3 and this could have been a very different series. It looks like the Red Wings will take the cup. Three cups and one other finals appearance and counting in 10 years. Not bad.

Yeah, it's hard to fault that decision. Lidstrom may be the most quiet superstar I've ever seen. He's been among the best 2 or 3 defensemen in the world for a decade, yet you rarely hear about him.

Lidstrom didn't make very many mistakes in the playoffs and he came up with some big goals. It looks like the Red Wings may be a very different team next year... Bowman is retiring, Hasek might too. I'll enjoy their victory while I can.

If Hasek retires I wouldn't be surprised to see Cujo in a Red Wings uniform.

You left out a couple of other possible guys in Duchesne and Olausson on defense, both of whom are mid-30s. And Brett Hull is 38! I don't know how much longer he'll want to stick around, especially if he sees others around him leaving.

That's not to say that they'll all be gone. Only Larionov seems a sure bet to retire.

Assuming Forsberg is healthy, I'd think Colorado would have a good shot. Even with an aging Roy, they're still stacked, and David Aebischer isn't a bad goalie. That team has a ton of depth.

And I still wouldn't count out Detroit. Beyond that, I don't see anyone who particularly stands out.
