View Full Version : Getting Run

Late report because Harry Connick Jr put on a great show. If he comes to your neighborhood, it's worth every penny.

John Shulock should be suspended. His absolutely, demonstratably horrible calls set off a classic Mt. Piniella eruption. His callous refusal to then clean off the plate - instead forcing Dan Wilson to do it - is showboating at its worst. UTK just got off the phone with a player involved in the game and he said "His strike zone was all over the place. It changed from batter to batter, almost pitch to pitch. It was pretty clear [Rays pitcher Rupe] was getting some pitches called just to piss of Piniella."

ALEX RODRIGUEZ got run as well in a pretty nasty tirade. So did Jerry Narron and Oscar Acosta. With John Hart making desperation moves, Narron can't be long for Arlington. Shame. Hart should go first. Worse, the Rangers have about two picks in the first six rounds of next week's draft. Why steal Grady Fuson and then not have any picks?

IVAN RODRIGUEZ was assigned today to extended spring training. He will catch BP and DH in games there for a few days, then move to FSL-A Charlotte for a five game rehab stint. The plan of catch two days, DH, catch two days probably matches what Pudge will do once he gets back to the majors if you add in a day off. The best guesses look like June 7th for his return.

Late word on KEVIN BROWN is very positive. His injured elbow will require only conservative treatment and no cortisone injection(s). While it is possible that Brown will only miss two starts, it is more likely that he will miss three. OMAR DAAL will pick up the starts in Brown's absence.

The Braves had a very bad injury game. MARCUS GILES had a very ugly leaping ankle sprain. While the ankle is not broken, that might have been easier to recover from. If you see the highlight, you'll see that there is almost no chance that ligaments didn't tear. Giles is out a minimum of a month and further tests, scheduled tomorrow, may extend that call. CHIPPER JONES fouled a ball off his calf and had to be carried from the field. With GARY SHEFFIELD still hobbled, the Braves will be forced to juggle their lineup for a couple days. The severely bruised calf also has more serious implications for Chipper than most others due to his history of myositis ossificans, a condition where the muscle calcifies after severe bruising.

MILTON BRADLEY began a rehab assignment tonight with Triple A Buffalo. He should play there about a week before returning to the Indians. This is great news after an injury that was potentially career ending.

DENNY NEAGLE is expected to make his start on schedule Thursday. Same with BRAD RADKE.

JEFF NELSON will play catch for the first time on Friday. He is still on schedule to return around June 20. Maybe he should have used RICH AURILIA's surgeon.

TERRY ADAMS left his start tonight with spasms in his neck. While he was due to be lifted soon anyway, it is something to watch as the Phillies try to stay in the race. BRETT MYERS is looking for any opening and Adams has had success in the pen previously. Hmmmm.

TODD HUNDLEY could be activated as early as this weekend. He's hit well in EST and with Triple A Iowa, but he's hit nothing but rock bottom in Wrigley. ADAM MELHUSE is hitting pretty well in Iowa as well, but I'll leave that to Kevin Goldstein to tell you why Melhuse doesn't get a shot.

LUIS RIVAS officially began his rehab assignment in FSL-A Ft. Myers. He is expected to take the full twenty days before returning to the Twins lineup.

Sorry for the lateness ... I'll be more timely tomorrow. Or pretend I'm on the west coast. Something.

You have no excuse for not having the SABERMETRIC BASEBALL ENCYCLOPEDIA, the baseball equivalent of a Swiss Army knife with an IQ of 150. It's the third most used application on my computer, after my browser and word processor. Yes, more than SimGolf.

I have an automatic negative reaction when I hear Shulock's name and I can't place why. He's one of few umpires that I could name without prompting and thats probably a bad thing. Does he have a history of bad calls, showboating, etc.? Not that it's related, but isnt he about the last of the old replacement umps?

Shulock is usually very very good. His problem is that when he gets angry, he stops being impartial and can really affect a game like he did last night. Ive never seen him do something as outrageous as he did last night.

The one ump I have always been a non-fan of is Greg Bonin. I don't even remember why, but he seems to be out of position a lot.

Umps do have an insanely hard job. Ive done it for little league and high school and it is HARD. I respect the heck out of them, but the best way to umpire is be invisible ... too many umps think they're part of the game.
