Maybe it's just not having KEN GRIFFEY to talk about or maybe we're
finally getting a break, but it's a quiet night in UTKland tonight.
There's no real new news, but here goes a short edition.
JASON JOHNSON of the Orioles will likely make only one rehab start
after recovering from his broken middle finger. There appear to be
no ill effects from the freak incident.
Reports on IVAN RODRIGUEZ have been all over the place, but once
again, when it comes to the Rangers, no one tops Jamey Newberg. Our
Rangers source indicates that Pudge went through the first day of
baseball related activities with "expected soreness" and that he
will progress to running tomorrow. It is anticipated that he will do
some bullpen catching before moving on to catching drills. At best,
Pudge is still probably a month away and he's far from out of the
woods.
BRAD RADKE will return for the Minnesota Extortionists on May 29.
No, I'm not bitter. I'll have some interesting news on this early
next week after an interview.
Lots of questions on MARK MULDER and TIM HUDSON. While Mulder is
still not 100% with his back and forearm maladies, the A's deny
Hudson has any physical problems. The A's are all askitter and I'm
waiting for the next deal and trying to block out all the
conspiracies that I'm hearing.
KANE DAVIS ... yes, I said it was a slow news night ... KANE DAVIS
had a setback in his rehab and will need further rest before
continuing the path back for the Mets. The Mets bullpen has been
good despite the injuries, especially SCOTT STRICKLAND.
ALEX GONZALEZ, Cubs version, will be activated tomorrow. The hard
decisions the Cubbies should be forced to make might be delayed by
MARK BELLHORN's wrist injury. It would be easy to put Bellhorn on
the DL and hard to say "sunk cost" on DELINO DESHIELDS. Sometimes
the hard things are the right things to do.
We got some interesting questions from VERY well-placed sources on
expected high draft pick BOBBY BROWNLIE of Rutgers. Rutgers
officials responded to our questions with the party line
of "tendonitis" but the rumors persist. While this could hurt his
position in next month's draft, it brings up another question - why
don't baseball teams have the right to conduct physicals on athletes
prior to the draft? The NFL and NBA combines are like inspection
machines. Having been to the NFL Combine here in Indy for several
years, most complete physicals aren't nearly this complete. That
baseball is this far behind the other sports again speaks to the
management of the sport. I will again openly wonder when a maverick
owner will step forward and ask a certain unnamed reader to get a
high definition look in the mirror when it comes to baseball.
Next report SUNDAY, but look for a feature later tomorrow.
