Prior looked pretty good in his MLB debut tonight against the Pirates (yeah it was the pirates, but they're major leaguers too).

I saw a photo of him this AM from his college days. Does he have the biggest calves known to man or was it just the photo I saw?

Prior is built like a tank. I just saw the highlights of tonight's game and he looks like he's playing catch out there . Only he's got a breaking ball to die for.
With his mechanics he's going to be around for a while.
All legs and wrist snap.
Nice.

The one concern was that he pitched a lot in his last year at USC. Think the Cubs will try to keep his pitch counts down this season?

With his mechanics - seriously, perhaps the best since mid-80's Clemens - unless Baylor gets stupid with him, he should be fine. The Cubs knew he was overworked last year and let him shut down all fall. He didn't do any heavy work from the end of the CWS (June) to spring training. That will surely help ... and he sure wasn't rusty this spring. He got pulled at 103 and I doubt unless he gets something going like Kerry's 20 K performance that we'll see him go beyond 110. I HOPE Baylor isn't allowed to, at least.

[Withered up southern man voice]: "Biggest calves west of the mississippi!"
seriously though, anyone that can fun mid 90s and look so smooth (hey, mariano, how are you) is probably going to have a nice career

I was so PO'd last night to find out that neither of the ESPN games had the Cubs. I saw the brief highlights and I immediately thought of Tom Seaver.

On the Seaver thing, well, "they" said the same thing about Alex Fernandez when he came up (big legs, drop and drive style) and his game later went south, in more ways than one. Not saying the same will happen to Pryor - just saying we should let him pitch for 10 years before getting too pumped up.

Your constraint is very admirable. I can't believe how many columnists are ready to annoit him as the next Clemens. MLB is littered with pitchers who were supposed to be good but weren't.

I'm willing to get fired up about this guy and I don't even like the Cubs. Even if he only has a 10% chance of being the next Clemens, that's worth getting excited about. I'd trade the entire White Sox staff for him, although I doubt the Cubs would agree.

Give me a few more starts like that, and THEN I'll annoint him the next......fairly good pitcher. :) I'm not going to annoint him as Clemens, I'll just group him with Roy Oswalt.

If Baylor lets him throw more than 115 pitches, then I'll personally drive up there to beat him about the head and chest, soundly.

Amen, Brother Smed.
Time will tell if Prior is the next Tom Seaver or the next Jack Armstrong. And only time will tell.

I think we can all at least agree that if he keeps doing what he did last night, he'll be more seaver than armstrong!
