Stephen Jay Gould, a world-renowned scientist who modified Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution and who brought evolutionary theory and paleontology to a broad public audience in dozens of wide-ranging books and essays, died Monday at his home in New York after a long battle with cancer. He was 60 years old.
- - Smart guy, baseball fan, and appeared as himself on The Simpsons.
60 is way too young. :(
This was the first I'd heard of it. He was an amazing man; one I studied in grad school (as an engineer!)
Very sad news to hear here at NetShrine during what is usually the enjoyable part of my early morning ritual. :(

Gould was simply marvelous. His monthly articles in Natural History were a joy to read. I greatly respected his willingness to talk to Creationists but that's a group that isn't into a discussion of flawed logic.
Gould's didn't modify Darwin's theory as much as he explained so that people could understand it. His concept of "punctuated equilibrium" has yet to receive popular scientific acceptance. Doesn't mean it's wrong just that the evidence is insufficient at this time.

Precisely. He'll be missed.
